Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- A scorching-hot first half by the Dodge City Community College women's basketball team gave the Conquistadors plenty of room to work with in a 91-78 victory over Allen County on Thursday at the Dodge City Civic Center.
DC3 (12-2 overall, 2-1 KJCCC) used a 35-point outburst in the second quarter to jump out to a 51-28 halftime lead.
"We played a pretty impressive first half, particularly in the second quarter," DC3 coach
Mark James said. "I don't want to make excuses for the girls because we do have to figure out how to play better in the second half in games like that, but it gets tough when you put your foot on somebody's throat like that in the first half and you execute that well. Still, no excuses, we need to get better at that."
The Conqs held a 19-14 lead early in the second quarter before a
Rachel Slattery bucket in the paint ignited a 16-3 run capped by an
Alexus Johnson basket with 4:37 left in the half to make it 35-17.
The lead eventually grew to 23 at the break when
Fantasia Johnson scored with eight seconds left to push the score to 51-28.
While the Conqs were outscored 50-40 in the second half, they still did enough to come away with the 13-point victory.
Talisha Presley scored 17 of her game-high 30 points in the second half,
Alexus Johnson finished with 21 points and nine rebounds,
Antania Newton had 16 points while Slattery finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.
Haley Wilson led Allen (4-10, 0-4) with 18 points.
DC3's 12 victories already matches its win total from a season ago.
The Conqs are off for the holiday break and return to action Jan. 2 at Cowley.
