Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- All things seemed to be going smoothly for the Dodge City Community College men's basketball team when a
Jonathan Joseph bucket with 9:05 left in the game gave the Conquistadors an 18-point lead over Allen County.
The lead was still 16 points with less than eight minutes left before poor free-throw shooting and defensive struggles allowed the Red Devils to come all the way back and tie the game to send it to overtime before beating DC3 97-88 Tuesday night at the Dodge City Civic Center.
The Conquistadors (11-3 overall, 1-2 KJCCC) went 21-for-42 from the free-throw line, including 10-for-23 in the second half, while Allen (9-5, 1-3) shot 50 percent from the field in the second half and overall in the game to hand the Conqs their second conference defeat.
"We've had some bad practices and the guys haven't been focused and they are ready to go home (for the holiday break)," DC3 coach
Kyle Campbell said. "There are many reasons, but we haven't been very good lately."
The Conqs appeared to still be in control of the contest when
Lorenzo Dillard scored with 4:31 left to make it 74-64 DC3.
But a Quentin Blaue 3-pointer cut the lead back to single digits on the Red Devils' next possession as the DC3 advantage was eventually cut to two with 2:10 left when Darnell Jones-Bowie scored on a layup.
Another Jones-Bowie layup on Allen's next possession tied the game with 1:45 remaining. Jones-Bowie scored again on the Red Devils' following possession - again on a layup - to give Allen a 79-77 lead.
Dillard drained a pair of free throws with 56 seconds remaining to tie the game 79-79 as neither team scored the rest of the way to send the game to overtime.
The Conqs scored first in overtime on a
Jamil Hood basket, but a 10-1 run by Allen gave the Red Devils control of overtime and DC3 wouldn't get within four points the rest of the way.
Josh Boutte led DC3 with 28 points to go along with 12 rebounds, Dillard had 19 points,
Jamie Rutherford finished with 11 points, 12 rebounds and three assists and
Jamil Hood had 11 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals.
DaRon Mims had a team-high 26 points for Allen while Jermaine Long had 24 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and three assists.
The Conqs are off until Dec. 30 when they travel to play Northwest Kansas Tech.
