Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- The Dodge City Community College women's basketball team outscored Lamar Community College 30-12 in the third quarter to pull away for a 102-84 victory Saturday afternoon at the Dodge City Civic Center to stay undefeated.
The Conquistadors (7-0) held a slim 41-39 lead at the half and led 51-48 midway through the third quarter before an
Antania Newton 3-pointer ignited a 20-3 run for Dodge City to end the period - capped by a pair of
Brittany Leonard free throws to take a 71-51 advantage over Lamar (2-6) heading into the fourth quarter.
"It was a great third quarter for us," DC3 coach
Mark James. "... All the quarters are important of course, but we really stress the third quarter. That's been our money quarter this season. It's rewarding as a coach when you stress something and they execute."
As well as the Conqs played in the third quarter, they weren't as sharp in the first two quarters. Dodge City trailed 21-20 after the first quarter and led 41-39 at the half as the Conqs struggled with the Runnin' Lopes' full-court press (DC3 committed 17 first-half turnovers) and went 5-for-20 from the free-throw line.
"Lamar plays a unique style of basketball and they play at a frenetic pace, but we just didn't play very well in the first half," James said. "Going 5-for-20 from the free-throw line in the first half is embarrassing because we have good free throw shooters. It's becoming a mental thing. When somebody misses, they are letting one miss turn into two misses. We got to wipe those things away and move on."
Rachel Slattery paced Dodge City with 29 points, 19 rebounds and four steals.
Talisha Presley had 24 points, four rebounds and two steals, Newton had 14 points, five assists and two steals,
Dasia Johnson finished with eight points, four assists and two steals and
Kyra Fennell had eight points and three blocks.
Jamie Clawson led Lamar with 19 points to go along with eight rebounds.
The Conquistadors begin a stretch of six-straight home games 7:30 p.m. Monday against Chandler-Gilbert in Arizona - the first of three games in three days in Arizona. Dodge City next plays at home Dec. 10 against Allen.
