Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- The Sterling College junior varsity had no answer for the Dodge City Community College women's basketball team's press as the Conquistadors jumped out to a 35-12 first-quarter lead and cruised from there for a 93-53 victory in their home opener Wednesday at the Civic Center.
Dodge City (4-0) forced 17 first-half turnovers and doubled up the Warriors 56-28 at the half.
"We wanted to jump on them early," DC3 coach
Mark James said. "We don't want to give teams like that hope. We don't want to string them along. ... I thought the press was phenomenal tonight."
While the Conquistadors took their foot off the gas a bit in the second half (they pulled off the press, but still outscored the Sterling JV 37-25), they were able to get plenty of players minutes in an overall balanced attack.
Dodge City freshman post
Rachel Slattery finished with 20 points and 17 rebounds while sophomore guard
Talisha Presley also had 20 points to go along with four steals.
Antania Newton had 10 points while
Amber Espinosa,
Brittany Leonard and
Alexus Johnson each chipped in with nine points.
Dodge City dominated the glass, outrebounding Sterling 56-33, including grabbing 21 offensive rebounds. The Conqs also had 23 assists in the game with 11 of the 13 players recording at least one.
Alyssa Smith and Codie Hays led the Sterling JV with 10 points each with Hays adding a team-high six rebounds.
For Dodge City after traveling for its first three games of the season (including the final two in Chicago), it was nice to experience the comforts of home.
"It's fun for the girls to just get to play at home," James said. "We have some local kids on the team so their families and high school teammates are able to come out and watch. ... I thought there was really good support tonight. It was a weekday game with no guys game afterward, so for that instance, I thought we had a phenomenal crowd and I appreciate them coming."
The Conquistadors play at home again 5:30 p.m. Friday when they host the Bethel College JV in the Dodge City women's lone game of the Pizza Hut Classic (Saturday's contest was canceled for the women, the Dodge City men will still be playing at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday.).
