Volleyball Falls In Tight Battle With Hutchinson

Box Score Dodge City volleyball hosted Hutchinson to continue Jayhawk conference action, and the recent struggles continued as the Conquistadors fell in four sets to the Blue Dragons. 

The Conqs dropped the match 3-1 (18-25, 26-24, 24-26, 23-25), falling to 9-10 on the season and 3-4 in KJCCC action, while suffering a loss in four of the last five matches. 

After opening the night with an ace by Chelsea Durbridge, the Conqs would see Hutchinson go on a 4-0 run to take a 4-1 lead, and then the Blue Dragons worked to a 16-9 advantage and 20-12 lead. Conqs would put together a late 5-2 run, but it would not be enough as Hutchinson won the first set 25-18. Set two was tight throughout with Hutchinson putting together a 5-0 run to lead 21-18, but the Conqs countered and jumped back in front late and finished strong with a late Amariah White kill, helping the Conqs take the set 26-24. In the third set, it was again back-and-forth with the Conqs taking a 22-19 lead late, but Hutchinson pushed back and would end the set on a 7-2 run, taking it 26-24. Conqs didn't go away quietly, starting the fourth set strong, jumping out to a 7-1 lead and then a 9-2 advantage before Hutchinson put together a 7-0 run to tie the fourth set at 9-9. The Conqs regained the lead and held it until 21-20 when Hutchinson grabbed their first lead of the set and would not give it back, taking the fourth set 25-23. 

White continues her strong play for the Conqs as she hit .464 with 15 kills and had five block assists. Sunni Skipps added an eight-kill night, hitting .444, adding four aces and seven digs. Durbridge finished the match with 37 assists, three kills, seven digs, a solo block, and four block assists. 

Nine matches remain in the regular season, with six on the road for the Conqs as they look to put a run together to finish strong before the postseason. Up next, the Conqs travel to Liberal and take on Seward County on Wednesday, October 1st at 6:30 pm.
