Men's Basketball Beats Southwestern Christian Led by 42 Points From Derrick Rivers

November 09, 2025

Box Score A herculean performance by Derrick Rivers with 42 points helped the Dodge City men's basketball team for the third time this season outduel an opponent down the stretch as they closed out the game strong to secure a 96-85 win over Southwestern Christian to move to 3-1 on the season.

The day would start slowly for the Conquistadors as they fell behind 10-4 over the first three minutes of action and would trail until nearly seven minutes into the game when Rickey Loftin II cashed in on a layup to put the Conqs up 17-16. The lead worked its way to four for the Conqs, but the game would be tied at 20-20 with 11:26 remaining. Again, Southwestern Christian answered, going on a 10-0 run to lead 28-20. Despite the Conqs getting it back to just a few possessions, Southwestern Christian took the lead into halftime up 44-41.

Early in the second half, Rivers would start to take over the game, draining a pair of early three-pointers to put the Conqs in front 47-46 as he'd be on his way to a monumental night scoring 42. The game would stay in favor of the Conqs until a 59-59 tie with 14:21 left, but the Conqs would stay in front or tied the rest of the way as they led 85-82 with 2:53 remaining and would outscore Southwestern Christian 11-3 the rest of the way to secure the 96-85 victory.

The Conqs shot 50% from the floor as a team in the contest and again took advantage of the free throw line shooting 18-22 from the charity stripe.

Rivers had a monster performance dropping 42 points on 15-24 shooting, going 7-12 from the three-point line and 5-5 from the charity stripe, while adding six rebounds, two steals, and one assist. Jayvion Nurse chipped in 14 points, going 4-7 from the floor and 4-4 from the free throw line, along with three rebounds and three assists. Loftin II tallied 11 points as the third double-figure score for the Conqs, and Wesly Rosa added nine points and 10 rebounds.

The non-conference slate of games will wrap up next week for the Conqs as they have a pair of true road games, starting with a trip to Levelland, Texas, to take on #2 South Plains.
