Volleyball Posts a 3-1 Record at Home Tournament

September 01, 2024

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 At home for the first time this season, the Dodge City volleyball team played host to the Victory Electric Classic with seven total teams competing in 15 total matches and the Conquistadors put together a 3-1 record in their four contests.

The home cooking for the Conqs led to a 3-1 mark at the tournament and now a 4-5 record on the season and a three-match win streak as they head into KJCCC play on Wednesday.

The Conqs opened the tournament with a tough five-set loss to Eastern Arizona (19-25, 25-20, 33-31, 21-25, 11-15) but responded on Friday with straight-set wins over Frank Phillips (25-22, 25-15, 25-16) and Panola (25-20, 25-20, 25-15). The tournament wrapped on Saturday with the Conqs facing off with Midland in the final match and the Conqs would need five sets but came out on top (25-21, 18-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-9).

Up next the Conqs step into KJCCC action as they will take on rival Garden City on Wednesday, September 4th at 6:30 pm.

Vs. Eastern Arizona – Lost 3-2
The Conqs opened their home tournament on Thursday night and took on Eastern Arizona and would have another five-set affair in their future. It would be Eastern Arizona grabbing the first set 25-19, but the Conqs would respond to win the second set 25-20 and then the third set would be electrifying needing extra points to decide it. Conqs would fend off multiple set points by Eastern Arizona in the third set and win it 33-31 but were unable to use that momentum in the fourth set as Eastern Arizona responded to take the fourth set 25-21 to force a fifth set. In the fifth it was tight but Eastern Arizona made a push late to take it 15-11 and win the match.

Conqs in the loss had a 16 kill performance by Tess De Zanet along with six digs and Azra Arslanoglu finished with 11 kills and six digs. Both Agnes Hegardt and Beatriz Lampugnani Cornachini each tallied nine kills. Leisey Keli'i at the libero spot recorded 15 digs.

Vs. Frank Phillips – Won 3-0
Looking to avenge a loss earlier in the week on the road in Texas against Frank Phillips the Conqs got a shot to take on the Plainsmen again and would not disappoint winning in straight sets. The Conqs would take the first set after a tight back-and-forth battle winning it 25-20, while the second and third sets saw the Conqs separate themselves from Frank Phillips midway through the set to win each one 25-15 and 25-16 to claim the match.

Cornachini recorded 10 kills and five digs in the win, while De Zanet added nine kills. Hayden Pinard and Kamalei Wassman helped lead the offense with 16 and 14 assists each, while Keli'i finished with 12 digs.

Vs. Panola – Won 3-0
Day two of the tournament was capped by the Conqs earning their third win of the season with a straight-set sweep of Panola. The first two sets would be a challenge as Panola would hang around with the Conqs throughout each set but the Conqs would solidify each set in their favor late winning them 25-20 each. The third set would see the Conqs double up Panola at 12-6 early and take a double-figure lead on the way to a 25-15 third-set win to claim the match.

Offensively the Conqs were balanced with six ladies recording five or more kills each led by Arslanoglu who had 10 kills. Sila Yildiz tallied nine kills, six block assists, an ace, and two digs, while Keli'i again had double-figure digs with 12. Pinard and Wassman again helped get the offense rolling tallying 21 and 17 assists each.

Vs. Midland – Won 3-2
In the final match of the Victory Electric Classic, the Conqs would play their fifth five-set match of the season and would close the game strong winning the fourth and fifth sets to capture the victory. The Conqs started the match strong with an early 9-1 run in the first set that propelled them to a 25-21 first-set win, but Midland responded to win the second and third sets 25-18 and 25-23. Needing a win in the fourth set to remain alive in the contest the Conqs would take control and establish a 10-point lead which would push them to the 25-20 set win. In the fifth set the Conqs quickly took control going up 6-2 leading to a Midland timeout and the Conqs would put the finishing touches on the match winning the fifth set 15-9.

Arslanoglu and Cornachini paced the Conqs again finishing with 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Cornachini would tally a double-double for the match adding 13 digs. Zdenka Hovozdova had her best match as a Conq coming in and recording 21 assists and 10 digs, while Pinard finished with 23 assists and 10 digs to give them both double-doubles. Keli'i posted a season-high 21 digs in the win.
