Box Score It's a tough slate of games to open the 2023-24 season for Dodge City men's basketball as they continued the Midland Classic on Thursday and took on the host, #7 Midland, and suffered an 82-64 defeat.
The loss drops the Conquistadors to 0-2 to open the season as they will wrap up the Midland Classic with a class with #3 Odessa on Friday.
The Conqs fell behind 5-1 early in the contest but it was slow going for both teams who struggled to score early in the contest. It would be free throws that kept the Conqs within striking distance and the Conqs would tie the game at 9-9 and then lead 10-9 but that lead was short-lived. Midland regained the lead and over the final eight minutes of the first half would outscore the Conqs 17-3 leading to a 35-21 score at halftime in favor of Midland. The Conqs would find the bottom of the net a bit more in the second half but the shooting woes continued overall. Midland would maintain a double-figure lead until the Conqs closed to within nine points with 8:47 remaining at 62-53. The Conqs would be unable to get any closer as Midland went on to secure the 82-64 win.
In the loss, the Conqs shot just 21.1% from the field but were 34-40 from the free throw line in the contest. Gavin Shannon posted 17 points going 10-10 from the free throw line and grabbed five rebounds, while Chevalier "Ice" Emery chipped in 15 points and was 6-8 from the free throw line. Jamari Gamble tallied 12 points as he was 8-8 from the free throw line, while Hunter Duncan had nine points, eight rebounds, three steals, and five assists.
Up next the Conqs wrap up the Midland Classic playing against #3 Odessa on Friday, November 3rd at 3:00 pm.
