Box Score (Dodge City, KS.) – In a closely contested battle, the Dodge City Community College Women's Basketball team fell in a game that was heavy on defense and not much scoring. They lost what could be their final game at home of the season to Pratt Community College 47-46.
The first quarter started with each team hitting a 3-pointer then following it with 2 minutes of scoreless play. There was 7:36 on the clock before the 3-3 tie was broken by a layup from Courtney Cleveland of Pratt. She would make another layup before Addison Rawley hit a three for the Conqs. At this point, the Beavers were holding a 7-6 lead with 6:22 to go in the first. Over the next four minutes, just one point would be scored as Pratt made a free throw. The Conquistadors finally got their offense going a bit, as they would go on a 5-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 11-8. Makeala Ewing would add another 3 for DC3 prior to the end of the period to help go into the second quarter with a 14-12 lead.
The second quarter would start with Pratt going on a 5-0 run to retake the lead 17-14. The Conqs answered with a bucket and the Beavers again would go on a 5-0 run. During the second quarter, the Beavers would answer anything that the Conquistadors did as they were able to keep a 5-point lead for most of the quarter and would go into the third quarter holding a 5 point, 26-21 lead.
Â
The Conqs shot very well in the first quarter, by shooting 5-11, and 4-7 from 3. Unfortunately, there was a lid on the basket in the second quarter as they made just 2 field goals the entire quarter on 15 attempts.
In the third quarter, the game really started to get interesting. After the deficit increased to 31-24, Dodge City would begin to fight back and make this a back and forth battle the rest of the way. With the score sitting at 34-27, DC3 would make their move as they raced to a 15-3 run to retake the lead 42-37. With not much time left in the third, Pratt would outscore the Conqs 3-0 the remainder of the game to go into the fourth with the Conquistadors leading 42-40.
There would not be much scoring in the fourth from either team. Turnovers, lockdown defense, and poor shooting from both teams would limit any good scoring opportunities. The Beavers would retake the lead with 7:55 to go by hitting a 3-pointer. The lead would immediately go back to the Conqs as
Haleigh Hill would drain a jumper with 6:57 to play. For the next four plus minutes, there would be no scoring from either team. It was not until 2:11 on the clock that Pratt would once again regain the lead 45-44. On the next possession, however, the Conquistadors would answer right back in the form of a
Fredrionna Adams layup. DC3 once again had the lead, this time at 46-45. A DC3 turnover with 41 seconds to play would be key in the outcome, as the Beavers would hit a jump shot on their ensuing possession to take the lead and win the game as a 3 point shot in the closing seconds went off the rim for the Conquistadors. In a fourth quarter that saw just nine overall points, the Conqs were not able to overcome the lack of scoring, falling on Sophomore Night 47-46.
Â
For the game, the Conquistadors shot 34%, shooting well in the first, and third quarters, and poorly in the second, and fourth. They shot 40.9% from three and were outrebounded 34-26. The Conquistadors turned the ball over 19 times.
Allie Baker and
Addison Rowley scored 9 points each.
The Conqs are scheduled to play their final game of the regular season on Saturday at Northwest Kansas Technical College.
