Conq Women Let First Half Lead Slip Away

Box Score The Dodge City Community College women's basketball team had a big task in front of them as they traveled to Liberal on Saturday to take on #11 ranked Seward County Community College. They were more than up to the task in the first twenty minutes as they took a 30-20 lead into the half, but could not hold on against the Saints as they fell by a score of 63-51.

The first nine minutes of the game saw a very back and forth low scoring battle between the two teams. The Conqs led early only to see the Saints come back and take a 7-6 lead with 3 minutes remaining in the first quarter. The teams battled to a tie at nine before the Conqs were able to score the last three points of the opening period to take a 12-9 lead into the first break. Seward got a three pointer at the beginning of the second quarter to tie the game at 12, but Dodge City went on a 13-0 run over the next seven minutes to jump out to a 25-12 lead. The Saints were able to cut the lead to 30-20 at the half with a jumper just before the halftime buzzer.

The third period proved to be a letdown for the Conqs. The Saints got extremely hot from behind the arc and sped up the pace of the game. Seward County hit five three pointers in the third quarter on their way to scoring 27 points in the quarter. The Conqs stayed in the game by scoring 15 of their own, but they still fell behind by a score of 47-45 after three periods. In the fourth quarter the Dodge City offense disappeared. They turned the ball over on five of eight possessions at one point and only managed six points in the final ten minutes of the game. Seward scored 16 in the period to pull away for the 12 point win.

Haleigh Hill and Kaylee Dale led the Conqs on the night. Hill had 13 points and six rebounds, while Dale tallied 10 points and seven rebounds for Dodge City. No other Conq scored more than seven points on the night.

The loss drops Dodge City to 4-6 in Jayhawk Conference play and 9-10 overall. They will be back in action against another tough opponent as they will host  #4 ranked Hutchinson Community College at 5:30pm on Wednesday January 23 at the Student Activity Center.
