Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. – On opening night of the 2018 football season, the Conquistadors fell to No. 5 Independence by a score of 38-20 on Thursday night.
Drew Harris and
John Lux split time at quarter back in the first half but
Drew Harris took over for the entire second half. In the game, Harris went 10-for-17 and threw for 128 yards and one touchdown.
Justin Theriot got a majority of the carries for the Conqs as he collected 47 yards on 15 carries with a long of 18 yards.
On the very first drive of the game, the Pirates got a big play, to take them deep into Dodge City territory, but the Conq defense stood strong and held the Pirates to a field goals for a 3-0 lead.
After back-to-back turnovers by the Conquistadors, the Pirates got their first touchdown of the game to extend their lead to 10-0 with just three minutes left in the first quarter.
Just before the end of the half,
Tyrice Richie broke free in the secondary and scored Dodge City's first touchdown of the year on a 51-yard touchdown pass from
Drew Harris to cut the lead to 10-7.
In the first six minutes of the second quarter the Pirates added two touchdowns to their lead to extend the lead to 24-7.
To end the first half, the Conqs drove down the field and
Devonta Guillory nailed a 35-yard field goal to cut the lead to 24-10 heading into the locker room.
Independence took over in the third quarter, scoring on a five yard run and then scoring on a 68-yard pass to extend their lead to 38-10 heading into the final quarter.
Dodge City would not go down without a fight, cutting the lead to 25 with 13 minutes left on a 31-yard field goal from Guillory. The Conqs then scored another touchdown with 11 minutes left as
Myles Henderson blocked a punt and
Khalil Yow recovered it in the endzone to cut he lead to 18.
Independence then held their lead for the rest of the game and defeated Dodge City 38-20.
Dodge City will be in action again on Saturday, Sept. 1, as they travel to Garden City Community College to take on the Broncos as 7 p.m.
