Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. – Despite leading by two goals through the first 69 minutes of the game, the Conquistadors dropped their season opener to No. 16 Trinidad State Junior College in overtime, 3-2.
The Dodge City offense came out firing to open the season as they quickly scored a goal in the ninth minute as
Anthony Bolivar played a ball into the middle and
Santiago Hernandez slid and got a foot on it and put it in the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Just 30 seconds later,
Gustavo Lemos Borba took a turnover back the other way and quickly made it 2-0 in the ninth minute.
The Trojans came out of the locker room being extremely aggressive and it paid off in the 69
th minute as they netted their first goal of the game to cut the lead to 2-1.
Two minutes later, the Trojans were awarded a penalty kick, but keeper
Jacobo Figueroa Jimenez dove to his left to make a magnificent save to keep the Conqusitador lead at one.
With just over two minutes left on the clock, the Trojans were able to break the Conq defense and tie the game at two.
It did not take long in overtime as the Conquistador defense broke down and gave the Trojans a penalty kick just six minutes into overtime. This time, the Trojans converted and won the game, 3-2.
"It was great to see that the things we have been working on at practice showed results tonight," head coach
Oscar Zelaya said. "I am confident that this group of guys will come back from this minor setback."
The Conquistador men's soccer team will be in action again on Friday, as they travel to Southwestern Christian University at 4 p.m.
