Dodge City Uses Offense to Push Past Bethany

Justice Dixon had 20 points and 10 assists for the Conqs on Monday.
Box Score The Dodge City Community College men's basketball team had two games that were meant to be games that could get their new faces experience before they really got into the high quality competition that they will be facing a majority of the year. They sailed through their second of these two games on Monday night by beating Bethany College JV by a score of 106-89, despite a very spirited and hot shooting effort from the Swedes.

Coach Steve Tucker managed to get 10 players at least 16 minutes in the game as the Conq offense continued to work at a very high pace. Once again Jyrus Freels was a dominant force on the inside for Dodge City. The Conqs went to him early and often as he scored six of the first ten points of the game on his way to a 23 point and 14 rebound night. It was a subpar shooting night from behind the arc as the Conqs only managed to hit 3 of 17 three point attempts, but that did not slow down the offensive output as they found other ways to put the ball in the bucket mostly from inside the lane. Kevin Howard found his rhythm offensively and on the boards as he put up 13 points and 13 boards against Bethany. Justice Dixon found his way into the lane on multiple drives as he had a double double of his own with 20 points and 10 assists on the night. Mike Burns rounded out the double digit scorers for Dodge as he also tallied 13 points for the Conqs. The Swede squad did not go away easily as they were extremely hot from behind the arc. They hit 14 of 28 three point attempts and actually shot a better percentage beyond the arc than inside of it. The Conqs major advantage came on the boards. They outrebounded Bethany by a count of 60 to 29 on the night with Freels and Howard doing most of the damage.

"I thought we had our three returning players really step up and play well tonight," said Coach Tucker. "They understand what it is going to be like night in and night out in this schedule. They all performed well tonight and are setting a good example for our younger kids to follow. We still have to improve in areas of our game, but I am happy with the progress that I am seeing so far."

The Conqs will face very stiff competition this weekend when they travel to Liberal for the Seward County Classic. They will face Western Oklahoma on Friday afternoon, then take on #2 ranked South Plains College on Saturday afternoon. Both games will be a 4:00pm tip.
