The Conquistador football team returned home after their first long road trip of the year looking to snap a two game losing streak that came at the hands of two ranked teams. They managed to do just that on Saturday as they used a
Devonta Guillory field goal on the last play of the game to defeat Coffeyville Community College by a score of 22 to 21.
The game did not look good from the start for Dodge City as Coffeyville elected to take the ball after the Conqs won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. The Ravens were driving down the field, but a big hit by the defensive line on Coffeyville's running back forced a fumble that
Brandon Penerton jumped on to give the Conqs their first possession of the game. The two teams traded empty possessions before Dodge put together the first scoring drive of the game. After getting the ball in good field position at their own 43, the Conqs took to the air to drive the ball. The drive went quickly as
Drew Harris found
Terrell Warner on a 35 yard pass that was tipped by the defender, but Warner managed to pull in for the touchdown. That gave the Conqs a 7-0 lead with 9:40 left in the first quarter. After the Ravens were forced to punt again on their third possession, Dodge put together their first truly sustained drive of the day. They managed to drive the ball all the way to the Coffeyville 26, but time ran out on the first quarter and the Conqs were faced with a 4
th and 13. Rather than trying a long field goal into the wind, Dodge City went for it and did not get it on the first play of the second quarter.
Coffeyville once again struggled to move the ball on the Conq defense and were forced to punt for the third time of the day. That was when
Kadarius Satterwhite put the Conq offense in good shape as he returned the punt 48 yards to the Coffeyville 21 yard line. The offense could not take advantage of the good field position and had to settle for a 34 yard Guillory field goal to put Dodge City up 10-0 with 11:21 remaining in the half. The Ravens' special teams turned in their own special play on the ensuing kick-off. They returned the kick all the way to the Dodge City 49. Their offense took advantage of the good return and quickly drove the ball down and got their first score of the game on a Carson Proctor run to make the score 10-7 with 9:37 remaining in the half. After an empty Conq possession and a poor punt, Coffeyville once again had the ball in good field position. They drove the ball deep into Conq territory and appeared to be attempting a 31 yard field goal. After taking a timeout however, the Ravens changed their mind and went for it on fourth down.
Koby Perry managed to knock down the pass and the Conq defense was able to hold. Dodge City drove the ball all the way to the Coffeyville 10 yard line with under a minute remaining in the first half, but back to back penalties and a sack took them out of scoring range and the game went to half with Dodge City leading 10-7.
The Conqs received the kickoff to start the second half and managed to drive the ball near midfield, but their drive stalled out at that point. Coffeyville used a couple of big plays to put together a scoring drive that resulted in a Proctor touchdown pass to put the Ravens up 14-10 with just under nine minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Conqs were forced to punt again on their next possession and Coffeyville seemed to really have the momentum in their favor. The Ravens connected on a 49 yard pass that appeared to put the ball well into Dodge City territory, but an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty moved the ball back to the Dodge City 46 yard line. Another Raven penalty stalled their drive and they were forced to punt the ball back to the Conqs. The Conqs got another big pass play from Harris to Warner to put the ball in Coffeyville territory, then a big run from Harris to put the ball at the Coffeyville 21 yard line when the third quarter ended. Guillory connected again on the second play of the fourth quarter, this time from 37 yards out, to bring the Conqs within one point.
The Raven offense once again seemed to find their stride as they drove the ball down to the Dodge City 24, but once again penalties put them in a bad spot. This time back to back holding calls moved the ball back to the Conq 44 yard line. That was when the Conq defense came up big again, this time with Demien Thomas recovering a fumble. The Dodge City offense could not put together a drive and were forced to punt, this time pinning Coffeyville at their own 14 yard line. Coffeyville put together a solid drive, but attempted to go for it on 4
th and 4 at the Conq 32 yard line and came up short. Dodge could not get the offense going either at that point and Harris threw a ball that was tipped and intercepted to set Coffeyville up at the Dodge City 32 yard line. After penalties once again moved the Ravens back, Proctor found a wide open receiver for a 43 yard touchdown pass with 3:18 remaining and it appeared that Coffeyville was going to sneak out with a win. That is when the Conquistador offense took over and looked the best it had looked all day.
Daquan Bailey-Brown took the ball out to the Dodge City 31 yard line on the kick-off return. The offense struggled to get going on the first three plays of the drive, but on 4
th and 10 Harris connected with Tyrice Ritchie for a 46 yard gain to the Coffeyville 20 yard line. Then on second down from the 16 yard line, Harris found Bailey Brown for a touchdown. A failed two point attempt left the Conqs trailing 21-19 with 1:41 left in the game. On the ensuing kick-off, Guillory hit a perfect onside kick that was recovered by
Eugene Minter at the Coffeyville 47 yard line to give the Conqs a chance. Harris once again found Ritchie to take the ball down to the Coffeyville 29 yard line, then Harris kept the ball himself on a run for nine more yards. After an
Anthony Watkins run gave the Conqs a first down then a Harris keeper put the ball in the middle of the field, Coach
Gary Thomas used his final timeout with 4 seconds remaining. That set up Guillory's 30 yard field goal that sailed straight through the uprights as time expired to give the Conqs the 22-21 victory.
The win put the Conqs at 1-3 in Jayhawk Conference play and 3-4 overall. They will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Ft. Dodge, Iowa to take on Iowa Central Community College at noon.
