Box Score The Conquistador Women's Soccer team was looking for a breakthrough victory when they hosted Barton Community College on Wednesday, but came up just short. Barton was able to use a strong first half to come away with a 2-1 victory.
Barton got off to a good start as the Conqs appeared to be timid to open the game. Barton's Rayssa Neres, who is the fourth leading scorer in the NJCAA, struck just under seven minutes into the game to give them a 1-0 lead. Neres once again found the back of the net in the 18
th minute of the game to give Barton the 2 goal lead. The Conq defense stepped up from that point on in the contest it went to half with the score staying the same.
In the second half, Dodge City seemed to be a different team. They came out attacking and possessing the ball in Barton territory for much of the half. The Conqs put six shots on goal that were turned away by the Cougar's keeper and hit the post two more times. Finally with just over six minutes remaining in the contest
Marcela Martinez Coronado broke through with a goal to bring the score to 2-1. The Conqs had a few opportunities in the last six minutes, but could never find the equalizer.
The Conqs actually outshot Barton by a 12-11 margin, but the Cougars put more shots on goal by a 9 to 6 margin. Francine Mays and
Alexis McKinnon split time in goal for the Conqs, turning away seven shots between the two of them.
The loss drops the Conqs to 6-5-0 in Jayhawk Conference play and 7-7-1 overall. They will be back in action on Saturday when they host Hutchinson Community College at 2:00pm at Memorial Field.
