Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - After sweeping both Trinidad State and Allen County on Saturday and sweeping Cloud County Community College on Monday by scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-18, the Conquistadors have now swept three straight teams for the first time since 2010.
The sweep did not come easy, as Cloud County came out strong in set one, taking an early 7-3 lead. A service ace by
Jedda Alcee and kills from Alcee and
Jaylen Pegues tied the game at eight. Dodge City was able to take their first lead of the game on back-to-back kills from
Kate Warren, 11-9.
Back-to-back errors by the T-Birds, gave the Conqs a 13-9 lead, and forced Cloud to call their first timoeut. Coming out of the timeout, the T-Birds fought back and were able to tie the game at 15, but Dodge City took the lead right back and never looked back, winning set one, 25-19.
After Dodge City took a 2-1 lead in set two, Cloud quickly reclaimed the lead 3-2. With Cloud holding the lead, a kill by
Rachel Slattery and an attacking error by Cloud gave the lead right back to Dodge City. The Conquistadors were able to hold the lead for the remainder of the set, eventually pushing the lead to seven on a kill by Warren, 23-16. Both teams traded points to end the second set, giving the Conqs a 25-20 win.
Cloud County did not go away easily, battling throughout set three to not get swept. Late in the third set, the game was tied 18-18. A kill by Warren and an attacking error by Cloud forced Cloud to call a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, two errors from Cloud, two kills from
Raquel Valdez and a kill from Warren ended the match, giving Dodge City a 25-18 win and set three and a sweep of the match.
Dodge City moves to 12-7 on the year and will be in action again on Friday, Sept. 22, as they travel to Seminole, Okla., to take on Oklahoma Baptist at 3 p.m., and Seminole State at 5 p.m.
