Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. - After playing a total of nine sets in two games on friday, the Dodge City volleyball team played just six sets in two games on Saturday. The Conqs defeated Trinidad State by scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-23 before taking down Allen County by scores of 25-12, 25-18 and 25-15.
In the first set against Trinidad State, with the score tied at three, a service ace by
Alex Stecklein and back-to-back kills from
Jaylen Pegues and
Raquel Valdez forced the Trojans to call their first timeout, with Dodge City leading, 6-3. TSJC was able to take the lead back after a ball handling error by DC3, 11-10. After DC3 tied the game at 12, the Conqs went on a 6-1 run to make the score 18-13. The Conquistadors never gave up the lead, as a kill by
Gabriella Valdez ended the first set, giving Dodge City the 25-17 win.
With set two being the Conqs weakness so far this season, Dodge City came out strong, trading points with the Trojans until the Conqs were able to take a 19-14 lead on two attacking errors by the Trojans. The Conquistadors never looked back after regaining the lead and eventually extended the lead to six, winning, 25-19 on a kill from
Kate Warren.
Set three was all Dodge City as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never gave the lead back, eventually extending the lead to a game high seven points. Towards the end of the set, the Trojans went on a 3-0 run to cut the lead to 24-23, but a kill by
Rachel Slattery ended the match, winning the set, 25-23 and winning the match, 3-0.
With momentum on their side, the Conqs took on Allen County Community College in the last game of the weekend. Allen was able to take the early lead, but the Conqs were able to tie the game at eight before taking their first lead of the set on a service ace from
Gabriella Valdez, 9-8. Valdez collected two more service aces before the Red Devils were forced to call at timeout trailing, 11-8. Allen County was only able to score four more points for the remainder of set one, falling, 25-12.
Set two was a battle throughout, with both teams trading points until the Conqs went on a 5-0 on kills from
Gabriella Valdez, Jaylen Peques,
Madison Orr and two service aces from
Stephanie Garcia to take a 17-12 lead. Kills by
Raquel Valdez and
Kate Warren ended the second set with the Conqs winning by a score of 25-18.
Just like in game one, the third set was never really in doubt, as the Conqs led throughout, eventually putting the game out of reach, winning by a score of 25-15.
"Everything clicked into place for us today," head coach
Kamri Nehls said. "Our serve recieve was consistent. We were aggressive offensively and saw the court well. We just played well as a team overall. It felt good to finish our home tournament with a perfect day of volleyball."
The Conqs are now 11-7 on the year and will be in action again on Monday, Sept. 18 as they host Cloud County Community College at 6:30 p.m.
