Box Score HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Dodge City Community College women's basketball team could not overcome playing their second consecutive top-five nationally ranked opponent in 48 hours, falling to No. 2-nationally ranked Hutchinson Community College in a 101-44 road loss at the Hutchinson Sports Arena on Monday, February 27th.
DC3 concludes the regular season at 4-26 overall and 4-22 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while the Blue Dragons clinch at least a share of the KJCCC regular-season title while improving to 29-1 overall and 25-1 in the Jayhawk Conference.
HCC would get out and run throughout the first quarter, building a 10-3 lead just 3:34 into the game. Dodge City's first two field goals in the game would come long range with
Mariah Watkins and
Alexus Johnson each hitting a shot from downtown. The Blue Dragons would continue to push, taking advantage of eight first quarter Conquistador turnovers to lead 31-6 after one. An adjustment would be made in the second by DC3 by more than tripling their first quarter scoring output to score 19 points in the quarter. Johnson would start to take over late in the first half, finishing with a game-high 16 first half points as Dodge City would trail 57-25 at the break.
Foul trouble would start to get the Conquistadors in trouble in the second half as
Sada Smith and
Dakota Hoffman would each pick up their third foul in the opening minutes of the second half. Hutchinson would build on their lead throughout the 10 minute period, outscoring DC3 in the quarter 27-13 to take an 84-38 lead into the fourth. Dodge City would be down to only five players left just 58 seconds into the final frame as Smith would foul out, finishing with two points and three rebounds. Without any available substitutes, the Conquistadors would wear down throughout the fourth as HCC would come away with their 26th consecutive victory.
The Blue Dragons would finish over 50 percent from the floor, shooting 43 of 74 (58.1%) while holding DC3 to just 12 of 50 in the game (24.0%) with five of their 12 field goals coming from beyond the arc. The Conquistadors would get to the line 19 times in the contest, making 15 (78.9%). Hutchinson would force 27 Dodge City turnovers while scoring 34 points off turnovers and 12 fast break points.
Johnson would finish with a game-high 25 points in the contest to move just six points shy of No. 5 on the all-time scoring charts at DC3. With 538 points this season, Johnson has scored the fifth-most points in single season history at DC3.
Denis Ortiz and
Christina Frick would each finish with four points while Ortiz hauled in five rebounds and had two steals.
Though not official, DC3 is expected to travel to El Dorado, Kansas on Thursday, March 2nd to open the NJCAA Region VI Tournament against Butler Community College. A game time will be announced Tuesday morning when the complete tournament bracket is released.
