Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - A strong defensive performance in the third quarter which held the Mavericks scoreless for the first six minutes of the quarter helped lead the Conquistadors to a big 63-56 win over Northwest Kansas Tech on Thursday night.
Addison Rowley led the way once more for Dodge City as she collected a team-high 14 points. Alec Fitts was another key contributor late as she had nine points and eight rebounds in 30 minutes of play. Makaela Ewing and Francheska Aguino also scored in double figures with Ewing scoring 11 and Aguino scoring 10.
To begin the first quarter, both teams traded points for the first five minutes, but the Mavericks then began to pull away late in the quarter. With 2:47 to play in the quarter, a layup by Dejoure Boland extended the Northwest Tech lead to six, but the Conqs would not let the game get ouf of hand as they quickly cut the lead back to two. Northwest Tech knocked down a big three with 37 seconds left to push the lead back to five at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter is where the Mavericks began to pull away as they went on a 9-0 run in the first three minutes to quickly push the lead to 14. The Conquistadors would not let it get any worst from there, as they cut it to seven, but Northwest Tech extended the lead back to 11 before halftime.
The third quarter is where Dodge City made their run as they held the Mavericks scoreless until 4:01 left in the quarter. In that time, the Conqs were able to collect five points with baskets from Ashley Nelson and Rowley, and a free throw coming from Aguino. After the Mavericks pushed it back to 10, the Conqs made another run, eventually tying the game on a big three-point by Rowley with 1:40 to play. Dodge City was able to grab the lead with just 10 seconds to go in the quarter on two free throws from Aguino.
Northwest Tech was able to take the lead right back in the fourth quarter and push their lead to five, but Dodge City was not going to lose this game as they quickly tied the game at 53 with 2:29 to play and then took the lead on two clutch free throws from Rowley. Dodge City was able to knock down all 10 free throws in the final minutes to hold on to defeat Northwest Tech, 63-56.
Dodge City snaps a five game losing streak and moves to 5-7 overall this season. They now head into Christmas break and will not be in action again until January 3, as they travel to Allen County Community College.
