Comeback Falls Short in 66-64 Loss to Garden

Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - Coming off a loss at Colby Community College, the Dodge City men's basketball team lost their second straight game on Wednesday night, falling to Garden City Community College by a score of 66-64 inside the Student Activity Center.

Bruce Hodges led all scorers in the game with 16 points while also grabbing four rebounds. Tamaje Blackwell was the only other Conquistador in double figures with 11. Kevin Howard led Dodge City on the boards with eight rebounds.

Both teams started out slow, with both teams scoring just two points in the first five minutes of the game. Ishawn Murphy then made a jumper and then hit a huge three-pointer to give all the momentum to Dodge City. After a free throw by Garden City, Lazarus Williams knocked down another three-pointer for the Conqs, giving them a 10-3 lead with 14:12 left to play in the first half.

Garden City then went on a 7-0 run of their own, to tie the game at 10 just a minute later. Both teams then went scoreless for the next two minutes until Justice Dixon grabbed a rebound and found Hunter Davis leaking out to put down a big dunk to give the lead back to Dodge City. Both teams went back and forth with each other for the final 11 minutes with Murphy dropping two free throws with 25 seconds left to send the Conqs into the locker room down, 29-28.

To start the second half, Jyrus Freels knocked down back-to-back jumpers to give Dodge City the lead, but the Broncbusters took the lead right back a minute later and never gave the lead back. Four minutes into the second half, Garden City pushed the lead to five, but layups from Freels and Hodges and a free throw from Hodges tied the game for the seventh time.

Dodge City would not give up, trading baskets with the opposition, but with 2:08 left, Garden City threw down a thunderous dunk to give them their largest lead of the game, 64-57. Hodges then tried to bring the Conqs back, scoring three points in the next 10 seconds to cut the lead to three. After a free throw pushed the lead back to four, Bruce Hodges was fouled on a three-pointer with two seconds left. Hodges made two of the three free throws and after two missed free throws by Garden City, the Conqs were unable to get a shot off, falling, 66-64.

The Conqs are now 5-4 on the year overall and 3-3 in KJCCC play. They will be in action again on Saturday as they host Butler Community College at 3 p.m., inside the Student Activity Center.
