Conqs Grab 1st KJCCC Win, Defeating Pratt, 44-34

Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - Despite not score for just over seven minutes in the second half, the Conqs were able to step up on the defensive end, taking down Pratt, 44-34 and grabbing their first KJCCC win of the season on Wednesday night in the Student Activity Center.

Scoring came at on minimum on Wednesday night, as Taylor Lee led the way for Dodge City, scoring a game-high 12 points on four three-pointers in just 17 minutes of play, while Addison Rowley was the only other Conquistador in double-figures with 11 points. Kaylyn Maple came up big on the boards, grabbing a team-high 11 boards and also collecting four blocks.

The Conquistadors would not fall behind early tonight, quickly grabbing a 9-4 lead after Rowley was able to collect back-to-back baskets just two minutes into the game. Pratt was then able to start a comeback, cutting the lead to 9-8, but the Conqs finished the first quarter on a 6-1 run to take a 15-9 lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter was more of the same as Dodge City was able to extend their lead throughout the quarter. The Conq defense stepped up big time, as they held the Beavers without a field goal for the final 6:40 in the first half, as they extended their lead to 23-13 with four minutes to go on a jumper by Kyra Trice. The Beavers were able to knock down two free throws, but two free throws from Trice with five seconds left sent the Conquistadors to the locker room with a 25-15 lead.

Dodge City then quickly pushed their lead to 14 points in the third quarter, but then went cold on the offensive end, not scoring for the rest of the quarter. Fortunately, the Dodge City defense stepped up to the challenge, allowing just 12 points in the third quarter and taking a seven point lead into the fourth quarter as the Beavers were able to connect on a layup as the clock ran out.

After 1:14 of not scoring in the fourth quarter, Francheska Aguino was able to find Makaela Ewing for a layup to break the scoreless streak at just over seven minutes. On the very next possession, the Beavers had three layup opportunities, but those were all denied by two blocks from Maple and one block from Ewing to hold the lead at nine, 36-27. The closest the game got in the fourth quarter was eight, but Dodge City found their stride just in time, as Rowley and Lee knocked down huge three's to push the lead back to 15, with five minutes left to play. Pratt gave one last push to end the game, but it was not enough, as the Conquistadors were able to win, 44-34.

"We were solid when we stuck to our defensive game plan," head coach Zach Loll said. "Our rebounding got sloppy in the second half and we gave up too many offensive rebounds. We have to learn to slow down and finish at the rim. We have to enjoy this win tonight and get ready for Coffeyville on Saturday."

Dodge City is now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Conqs will be in action again on Saturday as they travel to Coffeyville Community College at 2 p.m.
