Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - After falling to the Broncbusters in five sets last week, the Conqs got sweet revenge on Friday night, sweeping Garden City on Sophomore night by scores of 25-22, 26-24 and 31-29.
After an emotional recognition of nine sophomores, the Conquistador volleyball team came out fired up for their matchup with the Broncbusters.
In set one, things were very close as Dodge City took a small lead early in the first set on a kill by
Rachel Slattery. The Broncbusters then fought back and eventually tied the game at 15, but the Conqs fired right back and took the lead back on a kill from
Jaylen Pegues. With the Conqs leading 21-18 late in the set, the Conqs then finished the game out strong trading points with Garden City until a kill by Jaylen Pegues gave Dodge City the 25-22 win.
Garden City struck first in set two, but the Conqs quickly took back the lead and eventually extended their lead to 7-3. After Garden made a comeback, Dodge City called their first timeout of the set. Coming out of the timeout, the Conqs caught fire once again, pushing their lead to four points before a Garden City was forced to call a timeout. The Broncbusters then took the lead late in the set and looked to be running away with it, but a timeout by the Conquistadors changed things around as the Conqs then tied the game and eventually won set two on a setting error by Garden City.
Set three was the most exciting set of the night, as the Conqs scored first, but the Broncbusters were not going to back down. Both teams traded points until Dodge City was able to take a 12-8 lead on a kill from
Kate Warren. Garden City tied the game again at 14 and then took a 15-14 lead on a kill. After extending their lead to two points, the Conqs were able to tie the game twice but were unable to take the lead until a kill from Dodge City gave them the lead back. Both teams did not want to lose set three and with the Conquistador student section behind them, the Conqs traded points with the Broncbusters until a block assist from
Raquel Valdez and
Kate Warren ended the set giving the Conqs a sweep over Garden City with a score of 31-29 in set three.
"It felt really good to sweep Garden and get a big win in conference," head coach
Kamri Nehls said. "For the Sophomores to leave that kind of mark on this gym and finish strong in front of the home crowd was awesome. I thought our defense was phenomenal tonight, we got up a lot of balls that we normally don't. We were aggressive and we played with a lot of heart. To go back and forth and finally pull it out in the end, I am very proud of them."
The Conqs are now 18-13 on the year and will look to stay hot against Barton on October 23 at 6:30 p.m., in Great Bend, Kan.
