Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- It appeared the Dodge City Community College women's basketball team had finally gotten back on track when a
Rachel Slattery basket and an
Antania Newton 3-pointer tied a Colby at 55-55 with 8 minutes remaining Wednesday, a Trojans team that had lost 19 straight games - including a 37-point victory for the Conquistadors on the road three weeks ago.
However, the Trojans went on a 9-0 run and never trailed again as DC3 lost 75-68 at the Dodge City Civic Center.
The loss is the Conqs' sixth in its last seven games and clinches that DC3 (17-11, 7-10) will be on the road to open the Region VI Tournament.
"That's a bad loss for us," DC3 coach
Mark James said. "There was just no effort tonight. It's tough to explain. ... I thought a couple kids played hard ... but you look down the bench and you just didn't see a lot of desire today. It's frustrating because that isn't who we are and it isn't who we have been this season."
The Conqs were led by Newton who finished with 25 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals while
Rachel Slattery had 22 points and 18 rebounds. Only those two and
Alexus Johnson (nine points) had more than three points in the contest.
DC3 struggled from the field, shooting 36.5 percent (23-for-63) - though Colby wasn't much better at 36.9 percent (24-for-65). Turnovers were a problem for the Conqs as they committed 16 while forcing the Trojans into only five.
Amber Perryman paced Colby (5-24, 1-17) with 25 points, 10 rebounds and four assists while Aubrey Thomas came off the bench and had 21 points and six rebounds.
The Conqs hosts Seward County 1 p.m. Saturday.
