Late Rally Falls Short For DC3 Women's Hoops

Dasia Johnson scored 16 in the Conqs first game back from break.
Box Score GOODLAND, Kan. - Hoping for a different result against the last team that they saw opposite of them on the basketball court, the Dodge City Community College women's basketball team could not get a desperation three to fall in the final seconds in an 87-82 loss to Northwest Kansas Tech in Goodland, Kansas on Friday, December 30th.

DC3 has now lost consecutive games to the Mavericks, falling to 3-10 overall while NWKT improved to 19-1 overall.

After getting out to a slow start, the Conquistadors took their first lead with three minutes left in the first quarter at 20-18 on a Taylor Nichols bucket. Dodge City would hold onto their lead for the rest of the quarter to take a 26-22 lead into the second. A reversal of roles would be found in the second quarter as DC3 would take their biggest lead of the game at 41-31 on an Alexus Johnson fast-break layup leading to a Maverick timeout. The timeout would kill any momentum that Dodge City seemingly had as Northwest Kansas Tech would outscore the Conqs 16-8 to close out the half and trail 49-47.

An Alexus Johnson bucket midway through the third would give DC3 a 55-52 lead before Northwest Tech would again double up the Conqs this time by a score of 14-7 down the stretch to take a 66-62 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of action. The Conquistadors would get within one point on two separate occasions to give them a fighter's chance and re-take the lead on a Nichols jumper with 4:36 left in the game. NW Tech would regain the lead for good on a trey with just over two minutes to go as Dasia Johnson would cut the lead to 83-82 with two free throws in the waning seconds. The Mavericks would hit a pair of free throws as well to re-take a three-point lead as Alexus Johnson would miss a game-tying three with eight seconds to go which allowed Northwest Tech to hit another pair of free throws to ice the game.

"We did another fine job of handling their pressure" head coach Zach Loll said in a post-game interview. "We played hard and had a good effort, but unfortunately it is always hard to get back in the swing of things after a long break." "Our focus this next week will be to take care of rebounding and keeping people out of the paint as we are excited to open the new year at home on Wednesday night vs. Allen County."

Alexus Johnson would lead the Conqs with 20 points as DC3 would have four players finish in double-figure points. Baily Shelor had 14 points while Taylor Nichols had 12. Dasia Johnson would be the other Conquistador in double-figures with 16 points.

Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference play re-opens on January 4th for Dodge City, playing host to Allen County at 5:30 p.m. from the Student Activities Center in Dodge City.
