Box Score GARDEN CITY, Kan. - In a game that was about as close as it could be for a majority of the game, the Dodge City Community College women's basketball team could not find a must-have bucket when it needed it most to fall by a final score of 66-64 at Garden City Community College at the Dennis Perryman Athletic Center on Wednesday, November 30th.
DC3 is now 2-6 on the year and 2-4 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while the host Lady Broncbusters improved to 5-4 overall and picked up their third KJCCC win of the year.
A tightly contested first quarter saw both Garden City and the Conquistadors trade blows in what would foreshadow the rest of the contest. Neither team would break out to more than a six point lead in the quarter with GCCC holding a 15-13 lead after one. Dodge City would have trouble finding a bucket for much of the second quarter as the Lady Busters would jump out to a 29-17 lead with just over four minutes left in the half before the Conqs would close the gap to 30-25 at intermission.
Working to close the gap out of halftime, Dodge City would score the first six points of the second half to take a 31-30 lead just three minutes into the quarter before Garden City would respond with a six point run of their own to retake the lead. Neither team would open up more than a six point lead for the final 25 points of the game with DC3 trailing 48-46 at the end of three quarters. The fourth quarter would look similar to the second quarter as Garden City would once again push their lead out to six points and play tight defense to hold the Conqs before a two treys would get the Conqs back within one in the closing seconds at 65-64. Garden City would tack on a free throw and hold Dodge City scoreless in the waning moments to come away with the two point victory.
DC3 shot 38.7 percent (24/62) from the field and would struggle from the charity stripe, hitting only nine of 15 free throw attempts (60%). DC3 would out-rebound the Lady Busters 39-33 and would force 20 Garden City turnovers compared to only 12 on the Conqs. Fouls added up on Dodge City, who would commit 25 personal fouls and one technical foul compared to only 15 personal fouls for GCCC.
Alexus Johnson led the Conqs with 20 total points and five rebounds while fellow sophomore
Brittany Leonard added 13 points and two steals.
Blair Johnson would score six points on two first-half three's while
Dasia Johnson finished with nine points and five boards. Garden City had four players in double figures led by a game-high 20 points by Jessica Carrillo.
Dodge City will finish out the week on Saturday with another KJCCC road contest at Butler Community College in El Dorado. Game time has been moved back 30 minutes to 6 p.m. from the Power Plant.
