Conq women travel to take on No. 8 Hutchinson on Wednesday

DC3's Fantasia Johnson
DODGE CITY, Kan. -- The Dodge City Community College women's basketball team, a squad that has already surpassed last season's overall and KJCCC win totals, faces defending national runner-up and eighth-ranked Hutchinson 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Hutchinson.

The Conquistadors (14-3 overall, 4-2 KJCCC) have won each of their last two contests, including a come-from-behind 73-72 victory at Independence without second-leading scorer and starting post Rachel Slattery (who missed the game due to illness). Antania Newton helped DC3 recover from a 14-point, second-half deficit with 26 points that included 6-for-10 shooting from beyond the arc. Newton leads the KJCCC and is fifth in the nation in 3-point percentage at 50.6 percent.

The Conqs made up for Slattery's KJCCC-leading 12.5 rebounds per game (sixth in the NJCAA) thanks to a pair of strong performances from Kyra Fennell and Fantasia Johnson. Fennell had 13 rebounds to go along with eight points, three steals and two blocks while Johnson had a team-high 14 rebounds (nine offensive rebounds) to go along with seven points.

Talisha Presley continues to lead DC3 in scoring at 16.1 points per game and is followed by Slattery (15.7), Newton (14.8) and Alexus Johnson (10.9).

Hutchinson enters Wednesday 16-1 overall and 6-1 in conference with its only loss coming at Coffeyville, 62-58, on Dec. 2. Since then, the Blue Dragons have won their last six games by an average of 25.5 points per game. Hutchinson is coming off a 59-44 victory on the road at Butler on Saturday, a team Dodge City defeated 70-56 at home Jan. 6.

The Blue Dragons have five players averaging double figures - led by 6-foot freshman forward Kirea Rogers at 16.0 points per contest. Rogers also leads the team in rebounds (8.0) and is second in steals (3.0). and blocks (1.2). Five-foot-9 freshman Lakin Preisner is averaging 12.2 points per game followed by 5-foot-8 freshman Taylor Stahly (12.0), 5-foot-6 freshman Inja Butina (11.8) and 6-foot-1 sophomore Mandy Madden (10.4). Butina leads the Blue Dragons in assists (7.3) and steals (3.8) while Madden is averaging 5.5 rebounds and a team-high 1.4 blocks.

It will be a meeting of the two highest scoring teams in the conference as DC3 is averaging 84.9 points while Hutchinson isn't far behind at 82.9. The Blue Dragons lead the KJCCC in field goal percentage (47.5) and 3-point percentage (42.1) while the Conqs are second in both categories (45.6 FG%, 36.7 3FG%).

While Hutchinson defeated Dodge City twice last season, the Blue Dragons were forced to forfeit all of their victories due to a violation of NJCAA and KJCCC bylaws and the wins went on Dodge City's official record.
