Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- With Cowley College threatening the Dodge City Community College women's soccer team's lead, a favorable bounce helped the Conquistadors put the match away.
A long shot from Jaque Gonzalez bounced off the crossbar and right to a charging
Cynthia Rodela who knocked it in with seven minutes left in the contest to give DC3 a comfortable 3-1 advantage it held on to Wednesday evening at Memorial Stadium.
The Conqs (4-3 overall, 2-1 KJCCC) had controlled much of the match (they outshot the Tigers 15-8) and built a 2-0 lead before Cowley's Nathalia dos Santos dribbled through the DC3 defense and scored in the 60th minute.
All the hard work by the Conqs in controlling much of the match paid off with a bit of luck as Gonzalez's shot from 45 yards out hit the crossbar and bounced right to Rodela and she put it in for her second goal of the match and sixth of the season.
"
Sometimes you get lucky too," DC3 coach Tim Romanello said. "... We were one-on-one on a number of occasions but the goalkeeper came up big. But sometimes you get rewarded for doing the hard stuff really well and not coming away with a goal that maybe you deserved and then you put up a shot, it goes off the crossbar right to a forward's feet and it makes it really easy. The harder the work the luckier you get is what the old adage says."
The Conqs got on the board first in the 12th minute when a great cross by Kristina Trinceri from the right edge of the penalty area found Rodela in front of the goal and the freshman put it in for a 1-0 advantage over Cowley (2-4, 2-2). DC3 made it 2-0 right before the half when Trinceri gained control of a bouncing ball and broke free and beat Cowley keeper Sandra Urrutia in the 42nd minute.
Romanello said he was pleased with the way his team executed.
"We were talking before the game if we can play the feet, if we could play quickly and if we could find those outlets out wide ... we are a really good team," Romanello said. "We gave up a goal because we switch off a lot, but the work rate is there. That's been inconsistent in years past. ... When we find feet, it exemplifies everything that we are trying to do. It was a complete team effort today and I'm proud. I'm really happy for them."
DC3 goalkeeper
Elyssia Lucio finished with four saves in the contest while Cowley's Urrutia had eight.
