Box Score COFFEYVILLE, Kan. -- In a game 19th-ranked Dodge City Community College never trailed and led for 51 minutes and 40 seconds (including the final 35:47), the Conquistadors needed a key fourth-down pass break-up with 44 seconds remaining to hold off No. 12 Coffeyville 34-28 Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
But however Dodge City got it done, it will take it as the Conqs have given themselves a chance to tie for the KJCCC title 1 p.m. next Saturday at home against Highland (it can tie Butler at 6-1 - the Grizzlies are already finished with KJCCC play).
Dodge City (8-2 overall, 5-1 KJCCC) on Saturday took a 34-21 lead with 10:20 left in the contest and appeared to have the game well in hand.
However, the Ravens (7-3, 3-3) rallied as a two-play, 58-yard drive capped by a Juwann Winfree 34-yard touchdown catch from back-up quarterback Cole Murphy cut the DC3 lead to 34-28 with 3:54 remaining.
Coffeyville went for an onside kick but the Conqs recovered, giving DC3 good field position at the Raven 47.
However, Coffeyville forced a turnover on downs when a
Tommy Lazzaro bootleg turned into a keeper and the freshman came up just inches short - giving the ball back to the Ravens at their own 32 with 2:54 left.
The Ravens quickly maneuvered down the field and reached the Conq 15 with 1:21 left.
Coffeyville eventually moved it to the Dodge City 7, but a fourth-down pass was knocked down and the Conqs ran out the clock.
A key moment - and major blow for Coffeyville - came in the Ravens' second drive of the game and the Conqs already up 7-0.
Dodge City defensive end
Jacob Harshberger got free from the outside and hit Coffeyville quarterback Riley Ferguson (the third-leading passing in the NJCAA) from behind - forcing a fumble the Conqs recovered as Ferguson stayed on the ground. Ferguson eventually was helped up, but never returned in the game.
However, Coffeyville eventually tied the game 7-7 with 9:41 left in the contest.
But the Conqs took the lead right back on the next possession as Lazzaro hit
Jeff George for a 21-yard touchdown pass to cap a seven-play, 51-yard drive (helped by a
Quandreko Statham 41-yard kickoff return) to make it 14-7.
Dillon Burkhard added a 47-yard field goal with three seconds left in the half as the Conqs took a 17-7 into the break.
Twice in the third quarter Coffeyville got within a field goal of Dodge City, but the Conqs were able to hold off the Ravens for their second win over Coffeyville in three years (Dodge City entered the game 14-52 all time against the Ravens).
Lazzaro finished 15-for-24 passing for 171 yards, two touchdowns and an interception (which was a ball off of a Conq receiver's hands) while rushing for another 68 yards and a touchdown.

Mark Thompson had a big game for the Conqs, rushing for 153 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries as DC3 ran for 230 yards.
George paced Dodge City with five catches for 54 yards and a touchdown while
Justin McInnis had four catches for a team-high 68 yards and a score.
Coffeyville's Murphy finished 19-for-45 for 273 yards, four touchdowns and an interception while adding 59 yards on the ground in place of Ferguson (who was 1-for-3 for 19 yards before being injured). Winfree had a team-high six catches for 115 yards and a score for the Ravens.
