Box Score STERLING, Kan. -- The 17th-ranked Dodge City Community College football team imposed its will quickly and often upon an overmatched Sterling College junior varsity as the Conquistadors jumped out to a 41-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 68-3 victory Monday night at Smisor Stadium.
DC3 (7-2) outgained Sterling College by 510 yards (554-44), including outrushing the Warriors 363-1.
The Conqs scored on its first possession of the game, when Florida-commit
Mark Thompson broke through for a 4-yard score to make it 6-0 (the extra point was missed).
On the first play of the Sterling JV's next drive, DC3 linebacker
Gary Johnson picked off a pass and ran it back 32 yards for a touchdown to give the Conqs a 13-0 advantage.
The Conqs got on the board again before the first quarter ended as
Tommy Lazzaro tossed an accurate, back-shoulder pass to Tennessee-commit
Jeff George who broke a tackle and ran the rest of the 20 yards for a touchdown to make it 20-0 at the end of the first.
DC3 scored three more touchdowns in the second quarter, capped by a beautiful, one-handed catch by Jeff McInnis from back-up quarterback
Malcom Gardner that McInnis sprinted free for a 68-yard touchdown to give the Conqs a commanding 41-0 lead.
The Conqs capped its scoring late in the fourth when Sterling tried to execute a fake punt, but the ball was fumbled and picked up by
Douglas Butts, who ran it back 31 yards for a score.
DC3 played many of its reserves from early in the second quarter on to get plenty of players experience and keep the starters healthy for Saturday's matchup with Coffeyville on the road.
Cole VanEpps led the ground attack for DC3, rushing for 151 yards and two scores on 19 carries.
Tyrone Clark finished with 100 yards and a score on seven carries, Thompson rushed for 47 yards and a score on 10 carries while
Greg Scott had 40 yards rushing and a score on three carries.
Lazzaro went 4-for-5 for DC3 in his quarter-plus of play for 58 yards passing and a touchdown while Gardner was 5-for-5 for 133 yards and a score.
McInnis finished with four catches for 128 yards and a touchdown for the Conqs while George had four receptions for 47 yards and a score.
Adam Condit led the DC3 defense with nine tackles (four solo) with a sack while
Torian Gonzalez and
Anthony McCray each had seven tackles.
