Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. -- The Dodge City Community College volleyball team used the break between the second and third sets against No. 20 Hutchinson on Wednesday to not only celebrate its five sophomores in their final home game, but to also regroup after dropping the first two sets.
It appeared to help as the Conquistadors took a 17-11 advantage in the third set.
However, Hutchinson bounced back and used an 11-1 run to take a 22-18 lead and won the third set to sweep DC3 3-0 (25-12, 25-6, 25-20) at DC3 Gymnasium.
"Early on in the first two sets we just had a lot or nerves," DC3 coach
Ashley Nehls said. "Then we had that break and for those sophomores, they realized this was going to be their last time playing on this court and they wanted to create a memory."
An inspired DC3 (4-28 overall, 1-12 KJCCC) jumped out to a 6-2 advantage in the third set and it grew to 13-7 after a block by
Sada Smith. The Conqs led 17-11 at one point, forcing Hutchinson (24-6, 13-1) to call a timeout.
But a service error by DC3 coming out of the timeout ignited an 11-1 run by Hutchinson and the Conqs never recovered from.
Smith led DC3 with six kills,
Briana Brown had a team-high 14 assists while
Katie Garcia finished with a Conq-best 11 digs.
The sophomores honored Wednesday were: Garcia,
Brianna Doussa,
Lindsey Area,
Hailee Hoskinson and
Casey Cox.
DC3 travels to play Colby on Friday.
