Box Score DODGE CITY, Kansas: An intense night on the pitch for both sides tonight, with aggressions running high and defense playing tough.
The Conqs and Thunderbirds hit the turf today with a want to win, and with a few close shots throughout regulations, it didn't seem to happen for either side.
As the game extended into extra time, the Conqs worked through the first overtime period. Goalkeeper
Alex Rodela posted a big save with 7:30 on the clock after a Thudnerbird sent a hard shot towards him from 18-yards out.
It was a close call, but Rodela garnered the save to keep the match going. Eventually the buzzer went off and the next overtime period began.
Things were looking very much like the first, until the 106
th minute of play. The opposition earned a corner kick opportunity, sent it in towards the goal, and put up a well-placed header to the top right corner of the Conquistador goal.
With the golden goal scored, the match closed up 1-0 with the decision going to the Thunderbirds.
"The boys played hard tonight…Cloud has a nice squad there," commented head coach
Tim Romanello. "Our performance is something to hang our heads high."
"Obviously we want a different result, but as always, we keep building."
Freshman
Ross Rodgers was the only Conquistador to post a shot on goal throughout the match.
"I told the boys to remember this feeling, use how you feel right now in our preparation for the next match," continued Romanello. "Opportunities need to be taken to full advantage, that's: against good teams, scoring goals off shots, that's limiting mistakes, that's playing time."
"Everything is opportunity and we may only get one or two or maybe three; it stresses the importance of converting chances and doing it with conviction."
The team put in five shots overall with Rodela amassing four saves in roughly 106 minutes of work.
DC3 is now 4-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the KJCCC. The men will hit the road next week on Wednesday, September 17 to challenge Cowley at 7 p.m. before heading back home on Saturday, September 20 to compete with Tabor College at 2 p.m.
