DC3 Women’s Basketball Opens Conq Classic with Close 61-58 Loss to Fort Scott

DODGE CITY, Kansas: Despite a 27-21 lead at half, Dodge allowed a 40-31 exchange in the second, falling 61-58 on the day regardless of best efforts.

The Conqs started out with a 4-0 deficit, but that was no indicator of the rest of the half.  After batting back for a 19-11 lead with nine minutes left in the half, the opposition started battling back.  Although the gap closed briefly, DC3 closed out the first half with a 27-21 lead.
 
DC3 shot for 31.3 percent from the field, 30 percent from three-point range and hit 4-6 free throws in the first half alone.
 
The Greyhounds came strong out of the gate in the second, working for a 30-30 decision with 15:13 of work left on the day.  Both teams worked back and forth throughout until the score stood 55-50 with only 2:45 left in the game.
 
A quick layup by Antania Newton followed by a huge three on the next possession by Newton, the Conqs evened things up 55-55.  Fort Scott worked away in the next few minutes edging a bigger gap on made free throws, adjusting to a three-point lead with merely seconds left.
 
With only six seconds left on the clock, Dodge City was able to get two three-point attempts out, but both were unsuccessful resulting in the 61-58 decision to end the day.
 
DC3 improved on the offensive a bit in the second half, but unfortunately it was not enough.  They hit 34.4 from the field, 30.8 from three and went 5-8 from the stripe.
 
Dodge capitalized with 20 points off turnovers, but was unsuccessful in the return allowing 18 points to the opposition in the same category.  Fort Scott gained the advantage on second chance points, owning 13-4 over the home team.
 
Keiwanna Patterson led the team with 16 points after hitting five from the field and three from long range.  She also went 3-4 from the charity stripe and owned two steals and two assists on the day.
 
Hannah Whitaker had another huge night off the boards with 15 rebounds throughout.  She collected 10 defensive and five offensive, while posting two assists, two blocks and four steals for the Conqs.
 
Newton put in 12 points for DC3 with one steal.  She collected three rebounds and hit five from the field and two from three-point range.
 
Azaria Nave led the team with five assists, while Tara Whipple owned nine points, two assists and four rebounds. 
 
The Conq Classic closes out tomorrow, November 8 with Dodge playing Tabor College JV at 5 p.m. in the Civic Center.
