Dodge City men's soccer played host to Western Nebraska to continue the season on Sunday, and the Conquistadors dropped a tough matchup 2-1 against the Cougars.
The loss sends the Conqs to 2-2-2 on the season as they gear up for Jayhawk Conference starting on Saturday.
The Conqs took possession early in the matchup and were aggressive, pushing multiple crosses into the box, but were unable to produce a shot. Western Nebraska countered multiple times against the Conqs in the first half and, late in the half, began to control possession, leading to set pieces, including a corner kick that was redirected into the goal in the 33
rdminute.
The Conqs trailed 1-0 entering halftime and, in the second half, had some early shot opportunities but were unable to get on the board, while Western Nebraska had a breakaway opportunity that led to their second goal in the 66
thminute. The Conqs finally broke through in the 82
nd minute after a penalty kick was awarded after a handball in the box, and
Brian Hara nailed it to bring the Conqs to within one. Conqs were unable to find another goal, falling 2-1.
In the loss the Conqs were outshot 18-12 and had just five shots on goal in the contest.
Conference play opens for the Conqs on Saturday, September 12
th, when they host Coffeyville at 1:00 pm.
