Dodge City softball stumbled on the road on Wednesday, dropping a pair of tough contests against Butler, falling 10-0 in five innings in game one and seeing a comeback attempt fall short in game two, 12-10.
The losses send the Conquistadors to 35-15 on the season and 17-7 in KJCCC action.
Eight more games remain in the regular season as the Conqs are on the road again on Friday, April 24th, for a doubleheader against Seward County in Liberal, Kansas.
Game 1 – Lost 10-0 at Butler (5 innings)
The Conqs started the day going down in order, in the top of the first, and had to climb uphill over the course of the day. Butler jumped in front early with a pair of runs in the first inning, and then things unraveled a bit for the Conqs in the second as Butler scored five to have a 7-0 lead. The Conqs bats remained quiet as the game moved along, and Butler tallied three more in the fourth as the Conqs went on to fall 10-0.
The Conqs were unable to record a hit in the loss, with only one base runner on a walk. While three different Conqs saw action inside the circle.
Game 2 – Lost 12-10 at Butler
Conqs showed some resiliency and took Butler to the wire in game two. Game two opened with a bang for the Conqs as
Karen Galaviz belted a leadoff home run, which was followed by a hit by pitch and single, and then a wild pitch made it 2-0 Conqs. Butler countered in the bottom of the first, scoring four and then another in the second to lead 5-2. In the third, the Conqs pulled within one on a two-RBI single from
Sophie Faidley pulling the Conqs to within 5-4.
Butler then had another big inning against the Conqs, scoring six in the fourth, working to a 12-4 advantage. Galaviz blasted another home run in the fifth to tighten up the game, hitting a grand slam, and then a
Riley Moore solo home run in the sixth pulled the Conqs to within three. In the seventh, a pair of singles worked a pair of base runners on, and a wild pitch scored a run for the Conqs, but the comeback fell short as the Conqs fell 12-10.
The Conqs tallied 10 hits in the loss, led by Galaviz, who was 2-4 with five RBI, two home runs, and a walk. Faidley was 2-3 with a run scored, two RBI, and a walk.
Starting pitching struggled early for the Conqs in game two, as game one and three different Conqs pitched again in the circle in the loss.
