The hot streak continued for Dodge City softball as they opened Jayhawk Conference play with a sweep of rival Garden City behind a pair of run-rule victories, 11-3 and 9-0, both in five innings.
The wins move the Conquistadors to 14-6 on the season and 2-0 in KJCCC action, as the Conquistadors' win streak extends to eight straight games, matching the longest under Head Coach
Mike Viramontez. Conqs also improved to 7-1 at home on the season and swept a doubleheader against Garden City for the first time since March 1st, 2023.
A busy week looms ahead for the Conqs as they hit the road on Monday, March 9th, to take on Cowley in a non-conference doubleheader to keep the season rolling.
Game 1 – Won 11-3 vs Garden City (5 innings)
The Conqs saw Garden City jump out to an early lead, but the rest of the day belonged to the Conqs. Falling behind 2-0 in the first inning as Garden City belted a two-run home run, the Conqs were not rattled, answering with four runs in the bottom of the first. A leadoff double by
Riley Moore set the tone for the Conqs, and she came into score on a fielder's choice from
Jordyn Boxberger. The lead flipped to the Conqs three batters later as
Loren Sweat blasted a three-run home run, making it 4-2. In the third, the Conqs batted around and scored three, then added three more in the fourth, to lead 10-2. In the top of the fifth, Garden City tallied a run to push the contest into the bottom of the fifth, and the Conqs would work a run in on an error by Garden City to cap the game 11-3.
Karli George picked up her seventh win on the season in the circle as she tossed all five innings, giving up just three runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out five.
Four Conqs led an 11-hit attack in the game, with multiple players recording multi-hit games. Boxberger was 2-3 with four runs scored, an RBI, a walk, a double, and a triple. Sweat added a 2-4 game with five RBI, a home run, and a run scored, while
Sophie Faidley added a 2-3 game with three RBI and a double.
Harley Shoaf added a 2-3 performance with a run scored and an RBI.
Game 2 – Won 9-0 vs Garden City (5 innings)
The Conqs worked through an early scoring opportunity for Garden City as they left the bases loaded in the top of the first. After holding Garden City off the scoreboard in the first, the Conqs would stymie the bats of Garden City the rest of the way, allowing only three more baserunners for the game. While the offense ramped up for the Conqs in the third, scoring eight by batting around, recording six hits in the inning, along with three walks. Five of the six hits in the third went for extra bases, including a two-run home run by
Avery McCloskey, an RBI triple by
Karen Galaviz, and an RBI double by Sweat. Conqs tacked on a run in the fourth on an RBI single by
Karli George that scored
Cache Atwood, who had a double in the inning. Conqs finished the contest in the fifth, working around a leadoff single by recording three straight outs following the single to earn the 9-0 win.
Seven different Conqs recorded a hit in the victory including a 2-3 outing by Moore who had a pair of doubles along with three RBI and a run scored. Faidley was 2-2 with a run scored and a double.
Boxberger picked up the win in the circle, tossing five scoreless innings, giving up just four hits and two hit batters with no walks, while striking out three.
