Men's Basketball Snags Win Late in Regular Season Finale at Seward County

Dodge City men's basketball continued to find ways to win as they put together another comeback, grabbing the lead late in the second half to snatch a victory away from Seward County, winning 75-74. 

The win moves the Conqs to 20-10 on the season and 16-8 in KJCCC action, finishing third in the KJCCC. The third-place finish earns the Conqs a first-round bye in the region tournament and a home quarterfinal playoff again on Tuesday, March 10th.  

Back-and-forth to start the contest as each team held a lead, as the game was 7-7 with just over 15 minutes left in the first half, and a Derrick Rivers three-pointer pushed the Conqs in front 10-7. That three-pointer by Rivers sparked a 17-7 run by the Conqs to lead 24-14 with 8:23 remaining in the first half. Seward answered back with a 10-0 run to tie the game at 24-24 and end the first half outscoring the Conqs 15-6, giving Seward a 39-30 lead at halftime. 

Over the first four minutes of the second half, the Conqs fell behind by double figures as Seward worked their lead to 47-38. Behind a 7-0 run with a Christian Brockett three-pointer at the end of the run, the Conqs pulled to within three at 58-55 with 8:44 remaining. Seward countered to push the lead back out, but the Conqs went on another run, getting a three-pointer by Andrew Mabry to make it 64-62 with 5:43 remaining. With three minutes left, the lead was back to eight for Seward after a pair of free throws, and then led by seven with 1:40 left. Richard Rojas nets a pair of free throws, and then a steal and layup by Rivers pulled the Conqs within three at 74-71 with 1:14 left. Conqs then got a pair of free throws by Rivers then a block by Brad Johnson on defense, leading to an outlet pass by Rivers to Mabry for a layup pushing the Conqs to a 75-74 lead with 15.3 seconds left. Seward misfired on a pair of looks in the final seconds as the Conqs grabbed the 75-74 win. 

Conqs shot 41.4% while holding Seward to 33.8% from the field and outrebounding Seward by eight at 48-40. 

Rivers paced the Conqs with 25 points, shooting 8-16 from the field and going 7-8 from the free throw line, while grabbing seven rebounds and adding three assists and two steals. Mabry tallied 11 points, including the game-winning layup, while Rickey Loftin II tallied 10 points and seven rebounds. Wesly Rosa had eight points and 11 rebounds, while Johnson added nine points and nine rebounds. 

The Conqs now gear up for the Region 6 Tournament and will host a quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday, March 10th at 7:30 pm against the winner of the first-round game between Cowley and Hutchinson.
