Dodge City men's basketball closed out another ballgame, earning a road win in tight fashion as they topped Colby 80-71.
The victory moves the Conquistadors to 15-7 overall and 11-5 in KJCCC action, while earning their eighth win over the Trojans in the series in the last 10 meetings, including three in a row.
The day saw the lead change hands several times, and the game remain with two possessions most of the contest. The Conqs grabbed early control, leading 6-2 nearly three minutes into the contest, and then went up 13-3 nearly six minutes into the game. Colby countered with a 9-2 run to pull within two at 15-12, but the Conqs remained in front until 1:35 left in the first half as Colby hit a three-pointer to grab a 30-28 lead. The Conqs would get a bucket by
Rickey Loftin II to draw even, and neither team scored again as the game went into halftime even at 30-30.
In the second half, for the first 10 minutes of action, the lead changed hands multiple times, and the lead would not be more than four points either way. The Conqs jumped up 57-52 with a Christian Brocket three-pointer, and then
Jayvion Nurse hit a layup and free throw, giving the Conqs a 60-52 advantage. Conqs used that lead to keep Colby at bay, even pushing the lead to double digits again at 72-61 with 2:10 remaining, and would ultimately secure the 80-61 road win.
Conqs shot 43.8% while holding Colby to just 33.3% and would overcome being out-rebounded by 10 in the contest.
Derrick Rivers surpasses the 20-point plateau again, finishing with 20 points and four rebounds, while Loftin II added 19 points and eight rebounds.
Brad Johnson chipped in 14 points on 5-8 shooting, including 3-6 from behind the arc. Nurse added 12 points, while
Andrew Mabry had eight points off the bench.
Conqs are back home on Saturday, February 7th, as they will host Coffeyville at 3:00 pm.
