Men's Basketball Drops Matchup at Home Against Coffeyville

Dodge City men's basketball was unable to complete another comeback, falling to Coffeyville at home 98-86 as a late surge falls short.

The loss drops the Conquistadors to 15-8 on the season and 11-6 in KJCCC action.

It was a slow start to the day for the Conqs as they started the ball game just 1-9 from the floor, falling behind 11-4 over the first four minutes of action. The Red Ravens lead would grow to double figures at 18-7 with 12:36 remaining in the first half. The Conqs finally settled in offensively and cut the deficit to three on a Brad Johnson layup to make it 21-18 with 9:30 remaining in the half. However, Coffeyville answered with a 10-2 run to expand its lead back out to double figures at 31-21 over the next three minutes. Coffeyville carried the 47-32 advantage into halftime as the Conqs would trail at intermission.

In the second half, the Conqs advances were constantly answered by the Red Ravens until the 7:15 mark, when the Conqs tied the game at 69-69, going on an 18-4 run to draw even. After a pair of free throws by Coffeyville, the Conqs took their first lead of the day at 72-71 on a Johnson three-pointer, and then would tie the game twice more over the next minute. Coffeyville put together a 10-0 run after the Conqs had tied the game at 76-76, and the Red Ravens used that run to hold off the Conqs down the stretch as the Conqs fell 98-86.

The Conqs gave up the best shooting percentage by an opponent this year as Coffeyville shot 54% in the contest, while the Conqs shot 46.7%. At the free throw line, the Conqs did take advantage with a 25-30 performance, but were out-rebounded 38-20 by Coffeyville.

Derrick Rivers led the Conqs with 25 points on 10-22 shooting, adding four rebounds and four assists. Johnson tallied a 20-point performance on 7-14 shooting and grabbed five rebounds, while Jayvion Nurse added 15 points and Rickey Loftin II scored 12 points.

Conference play continues for the Conqs with a showdown against Hutchinson on the road on Wednesday, February 11th, at 7:30 pm.
