In a top 10 battle, the #7 Dodge City women's basketball team took on #2 Butler, and a rough fourth quarter by the Conquistadors sent them to their fourth loss of the season, falling 67-53.
The loss drops the Conqs to 23-4 on the season and 18-4 in KJCCC action, while also halting the Conqs home streak at 37-straight games.
The night started strong as
Jolie Mantz hit a three-pointer to open the game, and the Conqs raced out to a 7-0 lead and went up 11-4. Butler finished the first quarter over the final four minutes, outscoring the Conqs 11-4 to make it 15-15 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams would hold leads in the second quarter; the Conqs down 26-23, they mounted an 8-0 run to lead 31-26, looking to take a lead into halftime, but Butler answered with the final five points of the half to have the game tied at 31-31 at intermission.
The third quarter was back-and-forth just like the first two quarters, and the Conqs carried a 46-44 lead into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter was a struggle for the Conqs as Butler put together a 23-7 final stanza and the Conqs fell 67-53.
In the loss, the Conqs shot just 31.6%, the lowest for a game this season, while having 17 turnovers and out rebounded by eight. Defensively, the Conqs held Butler to 35.7% shooting.
Mantz was the only Conq to finish with double figures on the night as she hit five three-pointers and tallied 16 points on the evening.
Manuela Piljevic added nine points and seven rebounds.
The Conqs will look to bounce back on Saturday, February 28th, against Independence in the final home regular season game, with tipoff slated for 1:00 pm.
