Strong shooting day helps Dodge City women's basketball take down rival Garden City on the road 85-68.
The Conquistadors improved to 23-3 on the season and 18-3 in KJCCC action, while winning their fifth straight over Garden City and eighth in their last nine meetings against the Broncbusters.
The lead changed hands early a couple of times before the Conqs went up 8-4 on a
Saje Evans three-pointer, but Garden City tied the game at 8-8 and then 10-10 with 4:23 left in the first quarter. The Conqs went on to finish the first quarter in dominant fashion, outscoring Garden City 11-2 to lead 21-12 after the first 10 minutes of action. The scoring run by the Conqs continued in the second quarter as they went on an 8-0 run to open the stanza and push the lead to 29-12. Ultimately, the Conqs posted a 20-14 second quarter and carried a 41-26 lead into intermission.
Throughout the third quarter, the Conqs maintained a sizeable lead, but Garden City didn't go away as they made a push in the fourth, pulling within seven at 69-62 with under four minutes remaining. The Conqs responded in a big way to finish the game outscoring the Broncbusters 16-6 over the final four minutes to secure the 85-68 victory.
Conqs had another efficient offensive day, shooting 46.6%, hitting 13 three-pointers, and had their best day at the free throw line this season, going 18-23. Defensively, the Conqs held Garden City to just 34.7% shooting and were +3 on the boards.
Leading the way for the Conqs was a pair of 19-point performances by
Savi Mi and
Manuela Piljevic. Mi tallied 19 points on 6-11 shooting, including 5-8 from three-point range, and Piljevic tallied 19 on 7-12 shooting and grabbed six rebounds. Evans tallied 13 points, going 7-10 from the free throw line, and grabbed six rebounds, while
Sofia Ahmed chipped in 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.
The Conqs are back home for the next two games, starting with a matchup against #2 Butler on Wednesday, February 25 that 5:30 pm.
