Dodge City women's basketball held off a late push by Cloud County to earn their 35th straight win at home as they picked up the 74-68 victory over the Thunderbirds.
The Conquistadors, with the win, improved to 19-1 on the season and 14-1 in KJCCC action, while making it 10 straight wins in the series against Cloud County. The victory also marks the 125th of the career of Head Coach
Landon Steele at Dodge City, moving him into second all-time in career wins in program history, while also being his 90th career KJCCC win.
It took nearly three minutes into the contest for the first points, but the Conqs struck first on a
Jolie Mantz three-pointer and then worked to an 8-0 lead to open the game and grabbed a double-digit lead at 14-3 on another Mantz three with 3:26 left in the first quarter. In the second stanza, the Conqs pushed the lead to 26-12 and carried a double-figure lead into halftime, leading 34-22. The lead surpassed 20 at 52-31 with 3:31 remaining in the third quarter and led 59-42 after three quarters. Cloud County would make a surge in the fourth quarter, posting a 26-15 fourth quarter, but the Conqs would make some free throws to secure a 74-68 victory.
Conqs shot 44.1%, making 26 field goals and dishing out 21 assists, while controlling the boards, finishing +11 in rebounding against the Thunderbirds.
Savi Mi led the Conqs balanced attack, finishing with 13 points on 5-8 shooting and dishing out four assists.
Saje Evans chipped in 12 points, while
Manuela Piljevic tallied a 10-point and nine-rebound performance.
Jade Célérier added nine points, seven assists, three rebounds, and four steals. Mantz and
Sofia Ahmed each posted eight points.
The Conqs are back on the road as conference play continues on Wednesday, February 4th, set to take on Colby at 5:30 pm.
