Box Score 4 The Dodge City volleyball team opened the 2025 season on the road at the Weatherford Tournament, taking on some top-flight competition with a four-game slate.
The Conquistadors opened the weekend with a 3-0 sweep of Wharton County, winning 27-25, 26-24, 25-13. Day one of action was capped with a tough three-set loss to #4 Weatherford, as the host of the tournament earned the win (13-25, 25-27, 10-25). The second day of competition saw the Conqs square off with #7 Indian Hills as they fell straight sets (21-25, 17-25, 23-25) and to finish out competition for the weekend the Conqs dropped a five-set duel with Frank Phillips (18-25, 25-17, 25-17, 18-25, 12-15).
Won 3-0 vs Wharton County
The season opened with the Conqs falling behind early to Wharton County in the first set, but they would overcome a five-point deficit, drawing within one at 21-20 on a block and then tying the first set up at 24-24 after fending off set point. Conqs would score three of the next four points and grab the first set 27-25. Set two would see the Conqs fall behind early again. This time, Wharton County worked to a 16-9 lead, but the Conqs mounted a 3-0 run to make it 16-12 and then chipped away, fending off set point twice and finishing the set on a 4-0 run, taking it 26-24. Early control was established by the Conqs in the third set, working to a 14-6 lead, then going up by double digits and routing Wharton County in the third set 25-13 to earn the win.
Chelsea Durbridge orchestrated the offense for the Conqs at the setter position, recording 40 assists with eight digs and adding four kills.
Kayla Cantrill started her Conq career with a 10-kill and seven-dig performance, while
Allison Mason added nine kills, and both
Amariah White and
Sunni Skipps each tallied eight kills.
Lost 3-0 vs #4 Weatherford
Against the host of the tournament, the Conqs would trip up in the first set, falling behind early, and would be unable to overcome the deficit as #4 Weatherford took it 25-15. Set two, the Conqs fought back and snagged the lead late, going up 22-20, but Weatherford didn't give in and ultimately outscored the Coqns 7-3, leading to a 27-25 Weatherford second set win. The third set saw the Conqs fall behind 13-7 early and would not be able to recover as Weatherford took the set 25-10 to finish the match.
In the loss to Weatherford, nine kills by Mason paced the Conqs, while
Mali Towers tallied 15 digs and Durbridge had 26 assists.
Lost 3-0 vs #7 Indian Hills
The Conqs looked to start strong on day two of the Weatherford Tournament and opened the match against #7 Indian Hills, establishing an early lead. Behind a few aces, the Conqs led 16-12 midway through the first set, but the Warriors would tie it up at 19-19 and then outscore the Conqs 6-2 down the stretch, leading to a 25-21 first set in favor of Indian Hills. Some Conq miscues would hurt the Conqs throughout the match, allowing Indian Hills to dominate the second set 25-17 and leading to a 25-23 third set in favor of Indian Hills. While the Conqs held a lead for a good portion of the third set, the Conqs were unable to stay alive in the match, falling in straight sets.
Cantrill had a big match for the Conqs, recording 16 kills along with six digs, while Durbridge finished with 33 assists and five digs.
Lost 3-2 vs Frank Phillips
To wrap up the Weatherford Tournament, the Conqs squared off with Frank Phillips, who would finish the tournament 4-0 after taking a tough five-set battle against the Conqs. A quick lead was grabbed by the Conqs in the first set, but Frank Phillips took control and would hold off the Conqs for a 25-18 first set. The Conqs responded by dominating the second set, working to an 18-9 lead and ultimately the 25-17 second set on a Durbridge ace to finish it. The third set early control was once again established by the Conqs with the block leading the charge to a 25-17 third set win. Frank Phillips countered in the fourth set to claim it 25-17 and force the match to a fifth set. In the fifth set, the Conqs fell behind 6-2, and while they pushed back, it wasn't enough, falling 15-12 to cap the match.
In the loss, Cantrill had her third double-figure kill performance with 16, along with two aces, four digs, and six block assists. Mason added 13 kills and 11 digs for a double-double, while Durbridge tallied 40 assists and 13 digs. Skipps finished the match with nine kills and nine digs, while White added nine kills and six block assists.
Up next, the Conqs dip into Jayhawk Conference play as they will host Pratt on Wednesday, August 27th at 6:30pm to open conference play. Then the Conqs will host the Victory Electric Classic for the second straight year, as the tournament will feature six preseason-ranked teams out of the seven teams participating (#2 Miami Dade, #8 Missouri State-West Plains, #9 Barton, #11 New Mexico Military Institute, #14 Eastern Arizona, and #18 Dodge City).
