Dodge City baseball wrapped up a week of non-conference action taking on a Top 10 team in the NJCAA as they squared off with #9 Johnson County. The Conquistadors would fall to the Cavaliers 8-5 and 18-2.
The pair of losses move the Conqs to 26-20 on the season with 10 games left in the regular season.
The Conqs will travel to Hesston to take on the Hesston Larks on Tuesday, April 22nd for a doubleheader and then take on Barton for a four-game series next week with two games at home on Thursday, April 24th and two in Great Bend on Saturday, April 26th.
Game 1 – Lost 8-5 at #9 Johnson County
The Conqs would fall behind early to start the day surrendering a pair of runs in the first but would battle throughout to remain close and push the #9 Cavaliers until the final out. Trailing 4-0 entering the top of the fourth the Conqs got on the board as
Calvin Warrillow belted a solo home run and
Freddy Oquendo notched an RBI single in the inning to make it 4-2. Johnson County however countered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead to a 7-2 margin before adding another in the fifth to lead 8-2. In the sixth
Jose Alfonso blasted a two-run home run to get the Conqs within four and in the seventh a Warrillow RBI double drew the Conqs closer but that's all the Conqs would get falling 8-5.
The Conqs would have only four hits in the contest as Warrillow was 2-3 with a run scored, two RBI, a double, and a home run, while the offense did draw seven walks.
On the mound,
Caleb Tucker tossed a solid 5.2 innings of action as the starter.
Game 2 – Lost 18-2 at #9 Johnson County (7 innings)
The second game of the doubleheader would see Johnson County tally a run in the first again, but the Conqs quickly answered with a run in the second on an RBI single by Oquendo to even up the game. Johnson County would settle in offensively over the next few innings scoring three in the third, four in the fourth, and two more in the fifth. The Conqs would manage only one more run over the next three innings getting on the board again in the fifth on a
Josh McClintock RBI double. Things fully fell the way of Johnson County in the bottom of the sixth when they would score eight and the Conqs could not get on the board in the seventh falling 18-2.
McClintock finished the game 2-3 with a double and RBI, while
Bynum Martinez added a 2-3 game with a run scored and a double.
Seth Brown chipped in a 2-3 game with a run scored. Five different pitchers saw action for the Conqs.
