Dodge City baseball kicked off a full week of non-conference action by traveling to Alva, Oklahoma, and took on Northwestern Oklahoma State University JV for a doubleheader.
The Conquistadors would split the action on the day falling 8-7 in game one and winning game two 10-3 to improve to 25-18 on the season.
The week full of non-conference action continues Wednesday, April 16th for the Conqs as they will take on Bethany JV in Lindsborg, Kansas for one nine-inning contest.
Game 1 – Lost 8-7 at NWOSU JV
After giving up a run in the first inning the Conqs got an RBI single by
Juan Concepcion in the top of the second to even the game at 1-1. However, in the bottom of the second NWOSU JV would score four runs to go up 5-1. In the top of the third, the Conqs had an answer with five runs to take a 6-5 lead as
Jose Alfonso,
Calvin Warrillow, and
MD Conner all had run-producing base hits to highlight the inning. NWOSU JV would tally another run in the bottom of the third and one more in the fourth to lead 7-6. The top of the sixth saw the Conqs draw even behind an RBI single from
Josh McClintock. In the bottom of the seventh NWOSU JV would work the bases loaded and score a run to claim the 8-7 win.
In the loss, the Conqs had 13 hits with five guys recording a multi-hit game. Conner finished 2-3 with two runs scored, two RBI, a double, and a walk, while
Cory Chostner was 2-2 with a run scored and an RBI. McClintock,
Seth Brown, and Warrillow each went 2-4 at the plate.
Game 2 – Won 10-3 at NWOSU JV
The second game of the day would feature early scoring by the Conqs as they plated four runs in the first with RBI singles by Concepcion and
Bynum Martinez highlighting the frame. NWOSU JV tallied a run in the second, but the Conqs would grow their lead in the third with three more runs, while NWOSU JV scored two in the third. In the sixth Alfonso drove in a run on a single for the Conqs and then two more runs would score for the Conqs in the seventh helping the Conqs secure the 10-3 win.
On the mound,
David Bosque tossed two innings to start the contest and the
Lane Benavides capped the game with five strong innings without giving up a run. Benavides surrendered just four hits and one walk while striking out three.
McClintock finished the game 2-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Alfonso added a 2-3 game with a run scored, a walk, and an RBI. Martinez was 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored, and Brown finished 2-2 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a walk.
