Men's Basketball Uses Hot Start to Beat Fort Hays Tech In First Round of Region 6 Playoffs

Riding a wave of momentum the Dodge City men's basketball team entered the postseason hitting the road for the first round for the second straight year and would take on Fort Hays Tech Northwest for the second straight year in Goodland.

The Conquistadors would avenge two earlier season losses and top Tech on the road 96-82 improving to 15-16 on the season and picking up their 11th win on the road this season.

The win moves the Conqs on to the quarterfinals in the Region 6 Tournament where they will take on #5 Cowley on the road in Arkansas City on Tuesday, March 11th at 7:00 pm.

The nets were on fire early as the Conqs were dropping buckets at a high rate to start the contest jumping on Tech with a 9-0 run to open the game. The points continued to pile up early as Derrick Rivers was scorching hot to start the night helping the Conqs to a 21-7 lead and at one point Rivers would have more points himself than Tech had as a team. The Conqs lead ballooned to a 32-12 advantage shortly under 10 minutes left in the first half leading to a 45-32 lead at halftime on the road. The second half would continue to see the Conqs remain in front by double figures most of the time, but Tech made a run to pull within five at 61-56 with just over 13 minutes remaining. Five points would be the closest Tech would get as the Conqs counted with an 8-2 run to grow the lead back to double figures at 69-58 and lead to a Tech timeout. Conqs closed out the game and secured the 97-82 win.

The Conqs started the game shooting 57% and 60% from three-point range and settled in to shoot 43.9% for the game and hit 13 three-pointers while also going 25-31 from the free-throw line. Defensively the Conqs held Tech to just 37.7% shooting. Conqs would have just 10 turnovers in the win.

Rivers had a monstrous game for the Conqs finishing with 37 points scoring 26 in the first half. His career-high came on 10-19 shooting including 6-11 three-pointers and he was 11-12 from the charity stripe while grabbing nine rebounds.

Keshawn Brown Jr. chipped in 20 points on 6-12 shooting and was 5-6 at the free throw line adding six rebounds, while Mynor Strong finished with 17 points. Jayse Boatwright added 10 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

The Conqs will take on the top team in the KJCCC in #5 Cowley in the Region 6 Tournament quarterfinals to continue in the playoffs as they travel to Arkansas City to face the Cowley at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, March 11th.
