Dodge City women closed out the regular season taking on #9 Hutchinson on the road and the Conquistadors dropped a tough overtime tilt 75-67.
The loss drops the Conqs to 26-4 on the season and caps KJCCC play with a 21-3 record. The Conqs claimed a share of the KJCCC title marking the fourth conference title in school history and earned the #1 seed in the Region 6 Tournament despite the loss.
Over the first three and a half minutes of the contest, the Conqs would jump in front 8-0 over Hutchinson but the Blue Dragons of Hutchinson would tie the game at 11-11. Conqs fell behind 18-15 late in the first quarter but a
Morane Dossou three-pointer tied the game at 18-18 after the first 10 minutes. The Conqs would start the second quarter on a 9-2 run to lead 27-20 and would work the lead to double figures as high as 13 leading 38-28 at halftime. After an even third quarter, Hutchinson chipped away at the Conqs lead in the fourth and the Blue Dragons would tie the game at 60-60 with 44 seconds remaining. After a pair of free throws by
Layla-J Cameron the Conqs were back in front 62-60 with just 18 seconds left. Hutchinson would call a timeout to step up an opportunity and net a bucket with three seconds left. The Conqs would feed the post for
Shorna Preston and the Conqs would be unable to convert and did not get a foul call despite contact sending the game into overtime. In overtime, Hutchinson would outscore the Conqs 13-5 leading the Conqs to drop a tough 75-67 road contest.
The Conqs shot just 39.3% while holding Hutchinson to 37.1% and outrebounding the Blue Dragons by nine. Turnovers plagued the Conqs in the loss, as they had 24.
Four different Conqs had double figures led by a double-double from
Shorna Preston who recorded 16 points and 16 rebounds. Cameron added 16 points going 10-10 from the free throw line, while
Tayah Morgan finished with 12 points.
Mia Jordan posted 11 points on 4-7 shooting.
The schedule flips to the postseason now for the Conqs, as they will have a first-round bye in the Region 6 Tournament after earning the #1 seed in the tournament. The Conqs will play in the quarterfinals at home on Tuesday, March 11th at 7:00 pm against the winner of Barton versus Garden City from the opening round eight versus nine seed matchup. The semifinals and finals of the Region 6 Tournament will take place in Hays at Fort Hays State University on Friday and Saturday, March 14th and 15th.
