Resiliency was on display on Sunday at Cavalier Field as the Dodge City baseball team fought to the end to edge Butler in a pair of tight ball games, sweeping the doubleheader to win three of four in the series.
The Conquistadors picked up a game one win 12-10 and then won 6-5 in 10 innings in the series finale to improve to 18-11 on the season and 4-8 in KJCCC action. The wins mark the first KJCCC series win of the season for the Conqs and first for Head Coach,
JM Kelly while also marking the second straight year the Conqs took three of four against Butler.
Up next the Conqs will take on Colby in KJCCC action hosting the Trojans on Thursday, March 27th for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm and then will travel to Colby to play a twinbill starting at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 29th.
Game 1 – Won 12-10 vs Butler
After a quiet first inning to open the day the rest of the game would not be that quiet starting in the second inning. Butler tallied two runs to grab the initial lead of the ball game, but the Conqs answered back with two runs on a two-RBI single by
Jaxen Derry in the bottom of the second. The Conqs took the lead in the third with a run taking advantage of a leadoff double by
Seth Brown. In the fourth Butler would draw even with a run making it 3-3 but again the Conqs answered scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth and then added two more in the fifth with a two RBI single by
Jose Alfonso. Butler would bat around in the sixth scoring seven runs including a grand slam to take a 10-6 lead. Conqs again responded batting around themselves in the bottom of the sixth scoring six runs to push back in front at 12-10 with a two RBI single by
Freddy Oquendo highlighting the inning. In the top of the seventh
Cameron Stewart would strike out the side sitting down Butler and cementing the Conqs in the win column with a 12-10 victory.
On the mound,
Wyatt Sadleir started for the Conqs tossing a strong five innings of work, while
David Bosque earned the win in one inning of relief and Stewart picked up the save.
Three-hit games by Oquendo and Brown paced the Conqs in the first game of the doubleheader. Oquendo was 3-3 with two runs scored, two RBI, and a walk, while Brown finished 3-4 with a double and two runs scored. Derry added a 2-4 game with three RBI, while
Josh McClintock was 2-5 with a run scored.
Game 2 – Won 6-5 vs Butler (10 innings)
The series finale would be a thriller needing extra innings to decide the contest. The Conqs would get on the board first as McClintock hit a triple to lead off the bottom of the first and Brown drove him in on an RBI single. The McClintock and Brown duo struck again in the third as Brown drove in McClintock again to make it 2-0 after three innings. It remained 2-0 until Butler broke through and got on the board with a run in the sixth and then scored three more to take a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh. Down to the final three outs the Conqs trailed by two entering the bottom of the ninth and would score a pair of runs and send the game-winning run home with two outs after a bad throw by Butler, but the Butler would get the out forcing the game into extra innings. The top of the tenth saw Butler blast a solo home run to give them a 5-4 lead. In the bottom tenth, the Conqs got a double by
Ben Longoria, a single by
MD Conner, and then an RBI single by Alfonso to tie the game. A walk drawn by
Bynum Martinez would load the bases for the Conqs with no-outs and Derry would hit a fly ball to right field for a sacrifice fly bringing in the winning run to lift the Conqs to the 6-5 win.
Stewart earned the win in relief for the Conqs, while
Marcos Santiago tossed 2.2 solid innings of relief and
Cameron Stukenborg was strong in 6.1 innings of work recording four strikeouts.
Three Conqs have a multi-hit game as Longoria was 2-5 with a run scored and a double, while Brown was 2-4 with two RBI, a run scored, and a walk. McClintock added a 2-4 game with a walk, a triple, and two runs scored.
