Dodge City baseball opened their second KJCCC series of the season on the road in Concordia taking on Cloud County and would ultimately be unable to stay with the Thunderbirds dropping a pair of games 14-4 and 19-9.
The pair of losses send the Conquistadors to 13-8 on the season and 1-5 in KJCCC action.
The series jumps to Dodge City on the weekend as the Conqs will host Cloud County on Sunday, March 16th starting at 1:00 pm.
Game 1 – Lost 14-4 at Cloud County
The day would start well for the Conqs as they got a leadoff double by
Josh McClintock to open the game, and he would score on an RBI single by
Juan Concepcion while the Conqs tacked on another run to lead 2-0. Cloud County countered with two runs in the bottom of the first and then scored four in the third to take the lead. The Conqs got a run back in the fifth on an RBI single from
Jaxen Derry and then another run scored off an RBI double by
Cory Chostner in the sixth as the Conqs trailed 6-4. In the bottom of the sixth, the offense went crazy for Cloud County and would end the game by plating eight runs to finish game one at 14-4 in six innings.
In the loss, Concepcion was 1-3 with a run scored and RBI, while Derry went 1-2 with an RBI. McClintock finished 1-3 with a run scored and a double, while Chostner was 1-2 with a double and an RBI.
Will Davis tossed five innings as the starter for the Conqs in the loss, while
Javier Pena and Wyatt Sadlier also saw action.
Game 2 – Lost 19-9 at Cloud County
Just like game one the Conqs would score first as Concepcion brought in
Seth Brown on an RBI double in the top of the first. Cloud County would answer quickly in the bottom of the first tagging the Conqs for six runs to take early control. In the second the Conqs would get on the board again, doing so with two outs. McClintock had an RBI double, while Brown brought in two runs on a single to make it 6-4 Cloud County. The Thunderbirds tallied eight in the third, while each team would post two runs apiece in the fourth inning. The Conqs got a run in the fifth, but Cloud County tallied one in the sixth and each team scored two runs in the seventh inning as the Conqs fell 19-9 in seven.
Four Conqs had multi-hit games in the loss led by a 3-3 game by Brown who had five RBI, a run scored, and a double. McClintock chipped in a 2-5 game with two runs scored, two RBI, and a double. Jose Alfrono went 2-4 with a run scored and a triple.
Calvin Warrillow added a 2-3 game with two runs scored, a double, and a walk.
Kenny Manresa got the start for the Conqs while
Caleb Tucker and
MD Conner each saw action.
Cameron Stewart saw the most action on the mound throwing four innings of relief.
