Women's Basketball Dominates Independence In Coach Steele's 100th Career Win at Dodge City

Dominate perhaps is an understatement when describing the Dodge City women's basketball 114-37 thumping of Independence, as the 77-point victory is the largest margin of victory under Head Coach, Landon Steele

The win moves the Conquistadors to 25-3 on the season and 20-2 in KJCCC action, while also being the 100th career win as Dodge City Head Coach for Landon Steele along with his 200th career win. The win also is the 50th at home for Coach Steele and gives the Conqs a current home win streak of 24 straight games.

Conqs wasted no time establishing control working to a 10-0 lead four and a half minutes into the matchup. The lead would only continue to grow over the first quarter as the Conqs were in front 28-6 after the first ten minutes of action. The contributions continued to be spread out in the second quarter for the Conqs as they would outscore the Pirates of Independence 33-9 in the second stanza and lead 61-15 at halftime. After the initial bucket of the second half by the Pirates, the Conqs answered with a 22-0 run to lead 83-17 and would post another lopsided quarter in the third outscoring Independence 30-9 in the frame. The Conqs would finish off the contest and establish a new high-scoring mark under Coach Steele with 114 points surpassing the previous high of 109 which happened in Coach Steele's first game as Dodge City head coach.

The Conqs would shoot 57% marking the 11th time this season shooting over 50% in a game and held Independence to just 27.5% shooting which is the 11th time an opponent has shot under 30% in a game this season against the Conqs. Independence would have 33 turnovers and made just 14 shots as the Conqs made 14 three-pointers in the game and had nearly as many made field goals 45 as Independence had attempted shots, 51.

As a team the Conqs had season-highs in total points (114), field goal percentage (57%), made field goals (45), assists (30), and opponent turnovers (33).

Layla-J Cameron tallied 20 points for the Conqs adding five rebounds, while Becca Unruh added 20 points on 7-10 shooting including 6-9 from three-point range. Savi Mi had a career-best 17 points with eight assists and four steals, while Tayah Morgan chipped in 13 points. Shorna Preston added 10 points and Morane Dossou grabbed 13 rebounds adding nine points.

The Conqs have their final regular season home game on Saturday, March 1st as they host #18 Coffeyville for a Top Three KJCCC showdown. It will be sophomore day and the Conq sophomores will be recognized before the game.
