Back in action for the first time since February 9th, the Dodge City softball team took the field at home for the first time this season hosting Cowley for a doubleheader. The Conquistadors would drop the first game 10-2 in five innings but responded in game two winning 7-1 for the split on the day.
The Conqs now sit at 2-9 on the season as they gear up for KJCCC action starting this week with doubleheaders against Colby and Garden City at home scheduled for Wednesday, February 26th starting at 1:00 pm and Saturday, March 1st starting at 1:00 pm, respectively.
Game 1 – Lost 10-2 vs Cowley (5 innings)
It was a struggle to start the day as Cowley tagged the Conqs for six runs in the top of the first by batting around and the Conqs would have an uphill climb the rest of the way. The Conqs would answer with a run in the bottom first and threatened for more but would leave the bases loaded. Cowley extended their lead with three runs in the third and added another in the fourth while the Conqs managed just one more run coming in the third and would fall 10-2 in five innings.
Whitley Cash at the plate was 2-3 with a double and run scored, while
Elly Tancayo went 1-2 with a walk and run scored.
Rylie Miller added a 1-1 with a walk performance and
Josie Oakley recorded a hit.
In the circle,
Anistyn Marcotte tossed the first three innings of work, while
Frankie Martens tossed the final two innings and just gave up one run surrendering just a walk to Cowley.
Game 2 – Won 7-1 vs Cowley
The Conqs would start game two strong working out of a jam in the top of the first inning as Cowley would strand a pair of base runners. In the bottom of the first, the Conqs grabbed their first lead of the afternoon as Tancayo hit a triple and then came in to score on an RBI double by Marcotte. Cowley answered in the top of the second to tie the game, but the Conqs responded strongly with two runs in the bottom. An RBI triple by
Jordyn Boxberger drove in a run for the Conqs in the third and then a two-RBI single by Marcotte in the fourth made it 6-1.
Kloe Nelson would bring in her second run of the game in the fifth behind an RBI double and the Conqs would continue to stymie the bats of Cowley with the pitching of Martens to earn the 7-1 win and doubleheader split.
Martens picked up the win in the circle tossing a strong seven innings giving up just one run on three hits, two walks, and two hit batters.
Tancayo was strong at the plate as she was 3-3 with a walk, two runs scored, and a triple.
Dezarae Schmidt added a 2-4 performance with two runs scored, while Marcotte was 2-4 with three RBI and a double. Boxberger also had a multi-hit game going 2-3 with an RBI, a triple, and a run scored.
